I only know of 6 also. Yes, there is an amp for the Infinity system. I was once told that it had some weird impedance, but I've been running two pair of aftermarket 4-ohm speakers plus the stock dash speakers with it just fine for over a year.

Not sure. Its possible they are labeled on the back of the magnet or on the amp case. Its likey the specs were never released. If I had to take a wild guess. I'd say under 15 Watts RMS front and under 30 Watts RMS rear for the speakers. Thats probably being quite generous. Anything other than a head unit driving them is overkill. If they play loud enough how many watts isn't a big deal, you can alway run a larger amplifier source to the speakers but turn it down till the distortion goes away.

Its not so much wattage that kills speakers it is distortion. you can do just as much or more damage at low volume if your distorting.

I'm curious why its so critical you know.

Do not bump your threads.

As you've seen, it's almost impossible to find out. Best guesses are on the order of 25 watts. I had one link from long ago from someone who really sounded like they knew, but I can't find it now.

oh it's critical because I have ruined my speakers. I guess I played the music too loud, therefore I want to change the speakers, but I don't know how powerful I can go, if I don't know the watt of the stock amp. If I get powerful speakers, maybe the stock amp won't be able to provide enough power.

you should be fine with any speaker you buy that is of the same size as stock... and i'm sure it will sound a lot better too :thumb:

I am doing my own system 12 in kicker with a kenwood amp, but when I need to hook up the RCA cables coming from the amp to the receiver. The stock receiver dont have RCA cables. So where do they go? Do I have to get a new CD player?? I have a 99 RS. So I appreciate any help. Thanks all

The easiest way without buying a new radio is to pick up a line converter from any place that sells radios. Even walmart or advanced auto ect, have them. converts speakeroutput to rca output for your amp. they are very easy to hook up and some you can even tune to make your amp really rock. :dsm: :talon: :laser: :rocks: :thumb:

i'm planning on installing my new headunit (kenwood KDC-MP7028) and my new 6x9 speakers (KFC-6999ie) and my first question is can i run the front speakers and new rear speakers off the amp that is under the passenger seat, stock amp? another note to add is that i also have a multi-channel amp that i use to run my 1 10" jl audio somethin or other, even if i could use the stock amp, would it be easier to just run the front and rear or just rear speakers off my aftermaket amp? would i need to adjust the amp in any way to avoid blowing any of my speakers? i already know how to do my sub only install, it's just that since my car was getting a new motor put in i took all my system stuff out. i dont want anything missing you know.

my second question is related to all of the big a@s subs that i've seen on a few dsm's. i'm wondering would either one or two kicker solo baric 12"L7's would be too much umph for me to put in my trunk area? im wondering if anyone has any problems with busting their rear windows? and if two solo baric l7's are too much, then how about just one 12"L7?

yes you can use the stock amp but you will need an adapter - get on ebay and search for 'mitah adapter'

you can get the mitah adapter at Radio Shack. I would bypass the stock amp though cause its a POS. It will sound better if you just dont use it, plus it makes it easier in the future if you want to upgrade your stereo again and throw a better amp in

A couple of months ago I was all excited about getting a new Headunit to replace the good old stock infinity unit.
and Bestbuy and Circuitcity said they would have to charge an extra 200$ just to bypass the amp under the seat, there is no way around it.
So i said no thanks.
Finally got a new unit and prepared for the long install myself.
Took out the old one, cut the harness spliced some wires and BAM
New unit in, in under an hour. I decided to check to see if the radio came on had power ect.
and I heard music...
MMMk... whats the deal? So i thought that it was just running through the amp under the seat.
But wait a sec... I thought I just had 2 places tell me that they would have to bypass that in order for it to work...
Well whatever ill just go ahead and rewire the speakers anyway to be safe.
So i moved the passenger seat forward unhook the amp, unscrewed it and placed it aside.
EVERYTHING is unhooked from the amp now, got curious though and turned the car on.
BAM
Music..
WHAT?! wait the amps unhooked... what the heck is going on?
I coulda sworn i had to wire the speakers to run straight to the back of the new unit but i guess not.
Any thoughts?

Welcome to the world of Circuit City. Or, Socket Circus.
Not all Infinity radios need the external amp. So you don't use the DIN cable and the speaker plug on the amp. The harness behind the radio -which you should NEVER CUT ON A CAR- goes straight to the speakers, except for the tweeters.
Yes, "bypassing" the factory amp is simply a matter of not plugging it in.

You can now send me $100 and be delighted that you saved a hundred.

there is a way to keep your factory amp and all the speakers working with out rewiring the car. the people at your circuit city were probly just to lazy or wanted to make extra money off of you for it. you can buy a cable from soundgate that will alow you to intergrate your factory amp with an aftermarket headunit. check it out if you are interested. The other thing that you are going to want to do is change your speakers at some point. if you still have the factory infinty speakers in there it could damage your head unit. those speakers are a 2 ohm speaker. the aftermarket headunits are designed to work with 4 ohm speakers. the factory speakers could cause your head unit to shut down.

*gasp*
not good...
I have changed all my speakers except for the tweeters, didnt change the wiring but does this fix the 2ohm problem? or do i need to do the rewire for the speakers as well?

Ya ya... ive heard it all before, i dont understand why not, its easier for me to look up the wire diagram then to pull 25$ out of my pocket to by a harness. but thats just me.
Speaking of tweeters, i did notice that they arent working now, how do i get this back working?

eclgst95: by changing the wiring you did nothing to the speaker itself. if you take the speaker out and put it on a multimeter it will read 2 ohms there is nothing you can do to change that.

That's why you get the same thing off eBay for $6.

Look for "tweeters" in the Technical Article section.

A lot of people think getting an aftermarket deck and having that power the speakers will sound better then the stock setup using the factory amp. It does not, as I'm sure you heard.

Who knows how many rms power the stock amp puts out, but your ears will tell you it sounds better then ANY aftermarket MOSFET deck.

If your deck has 4 channel preouts for f/r speakers get the MITAH adapter. With this you will output the sound to the stock amp, and all your speakers will work, including tweeters. And depending on the voltage output of the preamps, most people who arent into audio will be VERY HAPPY with the quality. And doing this, the only thing you have to splice is power, remote, and 2 others I believe. You don't have to do all those tapping of the speakers. Much cleaner, and much better sounding. This setup will surprise a lot of people. This is budget system that sounds good. Now if you have a non-fading subout from your deck also, get another amp and sub, and your set.

Hi dose any one know if theres a clip or decive out there that allows me to use infanty stock amp on my kenwood 7" dvd player i just bought for my gst? as of right now i have both the stock amp and a kenwood amp running to my subs and it sounds great but im useing the stock cd player and when i changed it once before i didnt have the stock amp hooked up and it sound like crap so i put the stock cd player back in so i would like to be able to use this amp on my new kenwood instead of haveing to buy a new amp.

Man not to be a bastard but use spell check next time.
Anyways, I beleive that the Infinity deck is a standalone unit. I dont think you can hook up another radio and still have the amp work. Kind of like the driving controls on the steering wheels of cars that have them. When you pull the stock radio and put in an aftermarket they dont work anymore.

well i have both the stock amp and a 800 watt kenwood working togather somehow the person who sold the card had rigged it up to where u can hook a amp to the amp which makes it pound my alpines. I hooked it up before to a 3rd party cd player and kenwood amp and it sounded like crap w/o that stock amp so i returned the cd player and stuck with the stock cd player and amp.

I would buy a good huge amp if i didnt spend $500 on the cd player and i know they make them for ford cars stock amps but i guess i cant be so lucky on eclipse cars.

If I am understanding you correctly you are talking about a line level converter (also called line output converter). This wires into the speaker level outputs of the stock amp and converts the signal to RCA pre amp level signals which can be then sent to an aftermarket amp. If you go this route I recommend you spend a little extra money and get a higher quality unit (Monster, etc.) as there can be a significant difference in sound quality between these and the cheaper ones which can be found for a few bucks.

Based on what you are saying, it seems like your setup was like this:

You have 2 amps, the stock amp, and an aftermarket amp.

Before you bought your 7" dvd player, you were running the stock radio and some subs and it sounded great.

When you changed the stock deck, it sounded like crap, because the stock amp was not working anymore.

So you put back the stock deck so everything was back to sounding good.

Correct?

If so I believe the person had it setup to where the aftermarket amp that was powering the subs were tapped to the rear speakers, or using a LOC (line out converter), leaving the stock deck and amp working correctly. Thus simulating a 4 channel amp to powering the stock speakers.

So when you changed your stock deck, you automatically lose the functionality of the stock amp, making the subs over power everything in the sound, which obviously lead to sucky sound.

I honestly don't know why you would want to use the crap non-adjustable amp anyways.

I believe I just stated why above. A lot of people have this misconception, or are just purely giving a placebo effect when they buy an aftermarket deck, especially if its very expensive. Why? Because the stock amp is a 4 channel amp, powering all the speakers in the car, and also has a built in crossover which makes the front sound stage similar to a component speaker setup. Obviously when you upgrade the deck and use a wiring harness or just connect it to where the aftermarket deck is powering the speakers, the stock amp is no longer working, obviously also because it uses a proprietary connection. What happens is you lose the great sound stage of the front channels, (losing the dash speakers/tweeters), and now are left with the aftermarket deck powering all the speakers and you have no dash speakers. This makes the soundstage move to the rear which is very dominant now at this point, and if you have subs, makes the front seem like they are non existent. Of course your mind and wallet is telling you, anything should be better than the stock amp because you paid a lot of money, so even though the soundstage sucks and even the sound sucks, it's still better because you paid X amount of dollars for this cool deck.

-----------

With that said, you do have choices.

What you need is the MITAH adapter:

This will allow you to use your stock deck with your nice 7"screen dvd deck. The connections are obvious, if you need help on that let me know. If I was correct about how your subs are connected currently (tapped to rear speakers or using LOC), if your new deck has seperate subwoofer output along with the 4channel preout, you can now wire it up correctly for better sound reproduction and adjustability.

Personally though, if you were able to afford a nice deck, and you have nice subs and amp, why stop there, your only 1-2 steps away from having a much better setup. Get some components up front and an aftermarket amp to power them.

There are other little tricks you can do, for those who are set to using their aftermarket deck to power all their speakers and still want the dash speakers to work, and completely remove the stock amp, its very easy as well. There is a guide by Attack Eagle, you will obviously need some aftermarket passive x-overs, and those don't usually come cheap and you might as well buy a true component set. And even then if you heard how bad the speakers sound being powered by an aftermarket radio, how much better can it be.

Before I would recommend an aftermarket 4 channel amp to powering the car speakers, but if you have subs, and you know how the soundstage should properly be set up, I would just go with a 2 channel amp powering your fronts, and have the stock amp power the rear for rear fill. As seen in one of the installs I did on a 2g dsm:
