Ok i had a problem with my motor, it was smoking.. blue smoke..!!! so i gave it a leak down test and found out most of my intake valve stems were bad on the intake side.... also all my intake valves were bent... and 1 cylinder had bad rings..... So now i installed every new gasket with mitsubishi dealer gaskets... i replaced all valves, put fresh new valve stems, valve guides were fine, new piston ring set from dealer, a good hone, hottanked, resurfaced head, block checked for warpage, polished crank with new clevite rod bearings, and to top it off... i was pointing the finger at the turbo. so i went on and rebuilt it as well.... now it starts fine and everything, but it still smokes... i would still point the finger at the turbo itself so went on and installed a brand new b16g. so im lost i would appresiate were to look....

This doesn't sound like a newbie question.

But how depressing. I mean there's often a bit of cook off after a rebuild, but how much smoke and what color? Where is the smoke coming from? Just the exhaust?

There is a chance you reassembled something incorrectly.

its blue smoke meaning its oil... everything was checked more than 7 times to make sure... and to top it off i replaced the stems again.. with no difference.. gave a compression test and leak down test and came out good... it only smokes when it gets warmed up...

You've checked everything I could think out, some how oil is getting into the combustion camber or past the seals in the turbo. Maybe try running a heavier weight oil to see if it goes away and gives time for the rings to seat. It's hard to say without seeing/doing the actually compression and leakdown tests. What were your numbers? Maybe you put excessive amounts of oil in during the leakdown test.

well my compression test came out.... 185-185-190-185.. and when i gave it a leak down test everything checked out good... i mean it didnt leak anywere... seemed pretty sealed to be honest... i added no oil... and it still came out good on the leak down test... were should i look for.. when the car is cold it doesnt smoke at all.. but if you leave it idling for half an hour it will start smoking, not bad but enough to notice.... would running rich cause any problems...

UPDATE...!! swap turbos again... with no luck.. i run it for hours and doesnt stop... its not alot of smoke but its noticeable.....

IM LOST PEOPLE...!!!

i replaced the turbo with a brand new one.. and it keept smoking for a bit but then started to calm down... i gassed it a bit and no smoke. now i come bak home and guess what? smoking again...!!!! whats going on..~!!!!

no oil in the intake and no i replaced all valve stems on every valve and put brand new piston rings...!!!

also pcv was replace like 7 times..!LOL

so now im starting to give up... ive looked everywere but no luck... i havent been able to break it in... help people...

Do you have catch cans to eliminate possible oil coming in from the pcv and valve cover to air intake? Can you narrow it down to a cylinder by checking the plugs? Maybe peer into the holes to see what the tops of the pistons look like, or remove the exhaust manifold to see if there is any oil residue in any port. You have good ring and valve seal so its gotta be coming from somewhere. Maybe restrict the oil feed to the turbo.

Wait... you replaced the rings and it hasn't been broken in yet?

That'd be your problem if so.. o_o During the breakin process there is ALWAYS smoke.

If your car was smoking a lot previously to the rebuild, there is a good chance there is a ton of oil build up in the exhaust system. Thus, is why it starts to smoke when it is fully warmed up. Just to note on the whole breaking in part. I have not once seen smoke from any of my engines while breaking them in. Also, if you have compression numbers in the 180 range, your rings are seated. Just my 02 cents :thumb:

Good bit of information about the exhaust.

However, during most rebuild break-ins, the engine will use a bit of oil until the rings seat. Now note, the ring will NOT seat by just starting the car and letting it idle, or driving it around at very low RPMs with no boost. As soon as you slap those rings in, though, your compression numbers will be good. In my experience, my numbers were good at first, dropped to about 160ish, and then went back up to 172 after the break in. The engine smoked lightly for the first 300 miles and then cleared up.

It all depends on the engine, however, and how well you honed out the cylinders. Drive the car a bit, keep a close eye on the engine, and see if it continues to smoke after a good break-in session with non-synthetic oil and heavy (not WOT) running for the first 500 miles. Keep in mind that you need to allow the engine to see boost. Not 14+ PSI, stock boost is a good idea for this.

This, and it depends on how long your car was be run with an oil leak. If you have enough buildup in the exhaust it will still smoke for a while. Get some seafoam and seafoam it Use small amounts and see if that will burn that shit out your exhaust.

It worked on all the cars I had that were smoking like that.

The exhaust only seems like the logical thing that it could be. All the right head work was done-Twice if i remember reading about the valve seals being replaced. Cylinder hone and ring job too. Not to forget he put a new turbo on too. Process of elimination basically. Reason why i have probably never seen mine smoke after rebuilding it, is because my eye is constantly laser beamed to my uego and the hot girl walking down the sidewalk LOL

I have a 1995 gsx 6-bolt build that is currently doing the same thing. It smokes after it starts to warm up. No smoke on initial start up and no smoke while under load. After it idles for a minute it starts smoking, not like a chimney but noticeable. I have 600 miles on the break in new machine work, rings, and valve seals. I have also tried 2 different turbos, and some heavy oil and still no luck. I have good compression and no leaks on a leak down test. My pcv is plugged and im venting back to the intake tube. I also have no oil in the IC pipes or intake manifold.
