so a shop told me that my seals are bad in my turbo and thats the reason i was smoking form the tailpipe..so i got my turbo rebuilt and still smoking..what can cause this, i rebuilt my motor 8kmiles ago, rebuilt turbo,..i dont know what can it be.
Also, theres alot of air comin out through the dipstick tunnel when i take out the stick..
Any help will be apprectiated..thanks in advance

where are you oiling your turbo from? it says you have a b16g. If you are oiling from the oil filter housing and you have no balance shafts, this may be causing the smoke.

that would have been something that would have been done during the rebuild most likely. Do you still have your balance shaft belt running? You may want to look through your reciepts or contact the machine shop? If its a b16g, you can oil from the head with no problems. I had this on an 18g, filter housing would smoke and head would not.

im pretty sure i have them anyway, because my car always ran fine untill one day i ran it and it started smoking from the turbo and i noticed it was leaking oil, me thinking it was making it smoke because oil from the turbo was goin throught the exhaust..

any pics of it running through the head?
ima ###### try that

oh yeah, you have 2g which oils from the filter housing stock i believe(not sure). Regardless there is a bolt on the passenger side of head by thermostat that 1gs use. Stock 1gs oil from the head.

ima try that..
if its able to blow through, that means its good right?

Yes and no. You see, the PCV is a check valve which means that is allows flow in one direction but not the other. When positive pressure builds in the head, the PCV allows the pressure to ventilate into the intake. Hence, PCV or Positive Crankcase Ventilation valve.

To check, remove the PCV valve from the valve cover. You should hear the ball and spring moving around inside if you shake it hard enough. Blowing through the threaded end (side that screws into the valve cover) should allow air to flow. However, blowing through the barbed end (side where hose is attached) should NOT allow air to flow. If air flows in this direction the PCV is either bad or clogged. You can try cleaning it out with a solvent. I've done this with much success.

If you need to replace it, many have said that generic aftermarket units don't always function properly and that multiple trips to the auto parts store are need in oder to find a good part. Also, the OEM ones can be hit or miss, too. Like I said, I've cleaned mine over the years with great success. Good luck and hope this helps.

it could be as simple as the pcv, overoiling turbo, or it could be blown turbo, bad valve seals or rings
I would replace the pcv regardless because its cheap, easy and good maintenance. Next look into the turbo, check for excessive shaft play in/out. Check how it is oiled as well, then look further into the motor

Here's a pic of my FWD's engine bay back when it was near-stock. Look at the corner of the head near the thermostat housing and you'll see the 10mm banjo bolt fitting and a hard metal line running to the turbo. This is the factory oil supply location on all 1G's, and is the best choice when running a MHI turbo on a 2G.

Although, I must say your turbo didn't show any signs of excessive oil consumption. The turbine seal lip on the shaft had some oil coking in it, but it easily cleaned up and the new seal fit as tightly into the groove as the one I removed. The turbine wheel was also dry, which normally means the turbo isn't the culprit of your oil burning. This, of course, doesn't mean you wasted your money....the new journal bearings and seals should prolong it's life drastically.

I agree that you should start with the PCV valve at this point. It should seal VERY WELL when you try to blow into the barbed hose end. If it doesn't seal, this means that boost pressure from your intake manifold is getting pushed into the engine through the valve cover, overpressurizing the crankcase, and causing problems like not allowing the turbo to drain properly.

Next look into the turbo, check for excessive shaft play in/out.

Not possible.

His turbo was in great shape when I received it to be rebuilt (no excessive play in any direction, possible turbine seal leaking) and being that he just received it back two days ago from being freshly rebuilt I would highly doubt there is any shaft play.

i just checked my pcv and its in good working condition..and ya i jst got my turbo yesterday from being rebuilt and theres no shaft play in that.. i did a compression test 4 weeks ago and it was 145 145 135.. Im goin to do another compression test and see whats up..

Check the oiling to the turbo then, I would just replace the pcv, it could be good, but just eliminate it from the possible problems. Definitely do another compression test, then as well

How many miles are on your car?

Compression below 150psi is a little on the weak side for a 2G. Not sure if it's rings or perhaps your exhaust valve seals are leaking causing oil to run down the stem and burn to the valve seat resulting in a poor seal.

My FWD (pictured above) had the leaky valve seal problem when I first bought it. If the car idled more than 30 seconds, it would smoke VERY heavy from the exhaust even with a freshly rebuilt Big 16G. A compression test revealed pressures as low as 90psi in one of the cylinders, and none over 120psi. The seals had leaked so badly that oil had run down and crystalized on the sealing area of the valve, causing low compression as well as oil comsumption and smoke.

You rebuilt the motor and turbo, but what about the head? You have good cylinder compression so your rings are good. But of course they are, you just recently rebuilt the motor. If you have already ruled out the PCV as a problem, I would do a leak down test to see how the valve train is sealing. You could possibly have 1 or more leaking valve stem seals.

Does the car smoke constantly or does it smoke more during the first startup in the morning after sitting overnight?

How much smoke are we talking about and does the amount of smoke decrease, increase or stay the same as the engine warms up?

If you haven't already said so, what color is the smoke- white, white-blue, black?

What does the smoke smell like- new oil, burnt oil or even a little sweet?

Do you have an automatic or manual transmission?

Just trying to get a little more information to help narrow down the cause.

i rebuilt my motor 8k miles ago..and i used low compression je pistons and eagle rods..
ima try and find out if its the valve seals

ya i redid everthything to the head also..and yes i ruled out the pcv..
how would i go about doing a leak down test?

at first it doesnt really smoke, but then after like 2 min it will start smoking whitish/blueish and if i accerlerate it, it throws out big clouds and it kinda smells like hot water..yes its a manual tranny
