I have changed the temp sensor the one behind thermostat , the fan comes on when it's supposed to don't remember the temperature tho . When the car starts to over heat the upper radiator hose is hot . So it can either be the radiator plugged up or i'dk? I just changed the radiator cap and I had put a brand new multi layer headgasket .

Do you have a FMIC? What fans do you have on there?

What's the condition of the radiator?

Check and make sure all your connections are snug. Maybe something came loose.

We're you in high RPM when shifting into 2nd or just normal shift?
Yea got a fmic , the radiator looks fairly new . I was in high Rpm when shifting and it just turned off rite after shifting

Well I can check that today the rear o2 sensor on mine has been cut so I'll probably take it to muffler shop , after I get it running .
I have a 95 fwd turbo that kept over heating and after taking out the thermostat and flushing the system didnt help, it turned out to be the catalytic converter. the honey comb inside broke free turned sideways and partially blocked the hole. but for me the damage was done and i lost compression in one cylinder. I remembered hearing a rattle under the car that went away and now i know why.

When your running hot, is your heater in the car hot or cold? I've gotten bad thermostats at advanced before. Brand new straight out of the box and in the car, still overheats. A couple years back, 3 in one day. Talked about pissed off. I knew it was that because of the heater was blowing cold air. Did you see if you coolant is circulating?

ake sure coolant is topped off, and let it idle until fans come on or until thermostat opens. Keep an eye on it and just let it idle I'm talking like 30 mins or more you can turn the heater on after awhile to verify heat operation. If the heater is working turn heater off and just let it idle. Let's make sure it does not overheat at idle.

Did you say the head gasket was replaced with a mls? Was the head milled? The block flat? If you dont know the health of the pump, replace it. Start at the bottom and work your way up. You shouldnt be overheating while your driving with a full radiator that isnt leaking. Buy a test kit to test for combustion gases in your radiator, it is cheap. Ive been here before, its almost always something stupid.

I let is sit and drove it bout half a mile and started overheating , at about 3/4 on the gauge the temp was reading 163°

yes.... water boils at 212 at sea level, add some pressure and you can see 230. 165 isn't overheating
Lol yeah that's what I was thinking.

So I would recommend replacing your temp sensor. They're not much and easy to change.

okay let me get this straight ....... ECM reads 165 degrees but the gauge in the car reads 3/4 to over heating ?
What leads you to believe that the car is over heating.....
Is it the fact the top rad hose is hot? or is there another condition that I missed ?

If the ECM says 165 then I would go with that as a temp and that is by no means overheating ..not even barely warm.

If your using a factory gauge ( which it sounds like they can be off after 20 years ) I would get a aftermarket Gauge and sensor into the system, I like mine tapped into the thermostat housing or in the upper rad house they make a kit to add the sensor to the hose.

The fans have settings which will turn on around 165 , that is not indicating overheating. I am guessing that you have some sort of logging / eprom ecu that allows you to see the temp, untill that says 210 I would think your fine.

What would be an abnormal temp for overheating , yea I might go ahead and get another gauge

In a separate post you stated the car was running rich and overheating after a couple of miles and the fans were coming on at 170. You replaced a ect sensor with one that oreilly sold you and it didn't look like yours so you cut it out and installed the one they gave you. Are you sure you bought the correct 1. Because in the same post your aware there is more than one ect sensor

How long did you let it idle
For like 20 minutes , can it be that I have a bad gauge or what . And it just recently started having blue smoke at idle and when I shift through the gears . And when my temp gauge goes to the read it's reads on ecm link like 175-80 and I popped the hood it was really hot and the overflow was boiling
