Hey guys,
I have searched and read lots of threads about steering wheel shake. Mine is similar to some but I noticed that it does not shake when I accelerate. The steering wheel shakes violently in the speed range above when I let off the gas and let it coast. I really have not tried anything yet, I am going to rotate the tires today, but I don't think that is it. I had the alignment done less than a year ago. And I replaced the rotors and brakes in February. The right side tire rods were replaced in September and the others were inspected and looked fine. Based on the acceleration bit I have a feeling it is not tires or alignment. I am worried it is something more difficult (expensive). Give me your thoughts on this.

I have a 1991 GSX with 98000 miles on it. Thanks!

Check your
1-wheel bearing, by lefting your car and tugging on the wheel to see if it shakes
2-Uneven wear in the tires
3-The axles.

I just got done rotating them and the problem is still there. I checked for play and found a very little top to bottom and none right to left on the passenger side. The drivers side tire did not move at all any direction. So it sounds like since I got the right tie rods replaced in September that the right ball joint might be going out? I will have to call the shop that did the tie rod and see how much a ball joint will cost me.

Tires might need to be balanced.
Tire balancing should fix this problem. Normally the steering wheel shakes once you get to a certain speed and then smooths out again. If it shakes more that what i have just said, your rack-n-pinion could be going bad like mine did.

This happened on my truck and a blazer I had, turned out to be U joints in the rear driveshafts and in the case of the truck also a U-joint in the passenger axle joint. I would check your cv shafts, jack the car up and turn the wheels one way then get under the car and spin the wheel and feel at the joint, if it clicks or you feel a lot of play in it its junk.
