Starting to Disassemble

Firs time I have really gotten into anything in depth in the engine. I bought a 95 tsi with a spun bearing. I have removed the turbo, exhaust manifold, intake tube, intercooler piping, throttle body, and am now on to the intake manifold. After I remove that I am going to remove the head and check out the block and rods/pistons for any damage along with the crankshaft. I understand that I can remove the head without a hoist or anything, but how heavy are the blocks? I don't have an engine hoist and am trying to do this rebuild on the cheap. Will I need an engine stand to do the block work? Also, if the block is OK, do I need to have any machine work done to it? What machine work do I need to have done on the rods/pistons if I get new/used oem ones? I don't want to sound like an idiot when I take the block and other parts to have work done to them.

Ok cool, my buddy and me should just be able to lift it out when we get to that point.

Any help on the machine work? What should I be looking for on the block? Pistons are not supposed to have scratches right? What else should I be looking for on the block and rods?

The head has three big holes in it, so its crap anyway .

You def should pick up a hoist and a stand they are super helpful as its a pain in the ass to pull it and put it back in with out them. I am not saying its not possible to pull it or anything, but a hoist would help, you could always rent one for a day, buy a stand, then when you need to put it back in just rent the hoist again. As per machine work, you may just need to have it honed as the long is there is no damage to the block itself.

Even if you dont get a hoist, you really should get a stand, you can buy one for around $50. You dont want to be rolling your block all over risking damage.
