Could be anything from a loose battery terminal to internal engine damage, and literally everything in between which may involve the electrical, fuel, and ignition system...possibly even something that you screwed up while working on the car yourself. While it's unlikely we're going to diagnose and solve your problem over the internet, feel free to discuss any possible solutions.



I live in Canada and right now its not very warm out, about -30c
my car does not have a block heater too keep it warm.

I tryed to start my car this morning and it wouldent start, ive had this problem before but this time, the car doesnt crank at all it just makes a sound that sounds like an electric drill.

Whats wrong.

Sounds like a no-compression spin.

Yep, thats definitely no compression. Top your coolant off and spin the engine over with the radiator cap off. I bet it shoots coolant out. Sure sign of a blown gasket and possibly more damage.

Ill take it to the mechanic in the morning, and really check the head.
I already spoke to the mechanic and we'll change favours, he'll check my car and I'll buff out his 64 Cadillac Fleetwood. Nice deal for me right now with no money and all. Im one of the only ones here in this country that knows the secrets of:
Meguiars "since 1901" products. They 'rule' and he'll get a MAD SHINING Fleetwood. =O)
Ill do the leak down test, compression and ALL we can do.

Could it just be the Head gasket? And only the headgasket that causes this??

Hey bro, have been reading thru your thread but havnt had anything to add tech wise. What I will say is you need to look at things in a different light bro! Think about it your dream to have a sick awd talon to rock in swed right, well you got it half there so far. Things happen that are out of our control and well sometimes suck the big one. The bright side is you have the car the down side is like 85% of dsm's it needs to be loved . Your first good move coming to dsmtuners for help, now it's up to you to be patient and learn your car. Just remember everything on your car is rebuildable. If its just the hg then take it to a shop and ask if you can watch everything they do. Not to be a dick about if there doing it right, but if you see something fishy speak up. More to learn your car for next time, you will be quicker to diagnosis the problem on your own. Anyway what I'm saying is try not to focus on the negative things that are in front of you now. Look past that and see the good that will come once the talon is fixed. If you do it right and take your time that beast will probably run 100 times better than before. I'll be watching this thread and if I feel I have advise I'll give it. Just from what I do know from shipping my car from Chicago to Hawaii. Once you get it fixed disconnect the battery to reset ecu (I'm sure if it is a blown hg this will be done anyway). What this will do is reset the ecu and help it relearn for the climate it's in. God bless bro and we wanna see the talon rollin thru swed real soon.

The first talon I purchased had a trashed engine. This was when I was 18 and didn't know any better so I purchased a jdm engine and after waiting forever for it to get here, the head gasket let go in 2days. I feel your pain. You just gotta keep moving forward. These cars take persistence.

Maby It was about to happen, for what it's worth. It drove 5000 miles before it got blow.
God knows how long ago the guy changed it who sold it to me.
Maby it just was a matter of time for it to happen.
Ill find out tomorrow for sure.
Hope you understand when I say I hate it right now but as soon as it fires back up Ill be back In Love with my Smokey.

ive been following this thread for a little while now... and i have to agree with most people here OP.... you have not dont everything you can to diagnose this.. or at least havent relaied the results of your test... im going through similar problems with possible damaged rod bearings... but there really is no reason to flip shits over it... its a car... life will go on and i agree with what was said earlier.. take a deep breath.. it might be time to consider a new hobbie if a dsm gets you THIS depressed... and i should know... my dsm depresses me all the time but i dont go flaming others that are trying to give advice.... what you NEED to do is give us your god damn compression numbers (which you havent done yet, and said you have doen the test... so wheres the numbers) til then i would think everyone offering help should stop until he at least does this... i did a compression test yesterday and it took a whole 15 minutes!!!! like shit man..... sit down and smoke a bowl, getting all hyped up isnt going to get you anywhere. plus if this was a 12 year plan of yours.. you should have considered that you would run into crap... and what was also said about verifying your parts with known good ones? you say thats you problem, and only your problem? well i will tell you this.. you dsm not cranking over is also your problem, and none of us HAVE to help you, we help because we want to and enjoy seeing others benefit from information given.

sorry i couldent put it as nice as this guy.. but what i said still stands and i think i speak for most people giving help.... the only reason i didnt contribute earlier is because you had people with probably way better knowlege of your specific problem... but when things started to get out of hand.. i just had to say what i had to say.. sorry but its the truth and i dont mean to be a "doosh" if you were planning on going that route

i have just finished building my car and it seems to not want to start. It is getting fuel, the spark plugs are sparking, but i didnt know if the intake should be getting air while the car is turning over. i took off the intake piping from the throttle body and it does not seem to be pulling air in while the car is turning over.what seems to be a possible issue that could fix my problem

Check is your timing. Is it misfiring while it cranks?

I almost was planning on going that route, but I didn't.
If you really followed this thread as you say you did then you would know by now that I get 0 numbers on every cylinder.
Haven't I written that almost like 10 times already, only the leak down test haven't been done and it's going to get done tomorrow.
And another proper compression test to see if it really comes out 0 AGAIN.
So as of now: The compression numbers are 0 on all cylinders.
I think I smoked a hundred bowls now over this, I get this depressed in everything I do that beats me because of my persistence.
Then I should change all of my hobbies when something goes bad?
Boy then life would really suck, witch it doesn't
I'm also a guy that want's to do everything by my self, in other words, I ALWAYS CHOOSE LEVELS OF VERY HARD IN LIFE BECAUSE THE OUTCOME IS GREATER THAN NORMAL. In games too for that matter. =O)

So after a little bit of testing at the mechanic shop we came to a conclusion that my head gasket is blown.
We made a test by pushing smoke in the engine and saw the leaks through the spark plug holes.
So it is 99% the head gasket.

Tare down Action in effect!!

Props to everyone that said it is the head gasket!!!!!!

i dont think i have air, i had my dad put his hand in front of the throttle body while it was cranking and he said it was not pulling any air, timing is corrct. and there is spark

Check timing marks. Make sure your dowels on your cam gears are facing up, and not down when your timing is lined up. If they are facing down then the valves will end up being open on the compression stroke instead of closed. which means bent valves.

Fix that then double check the timing, also don't forget to make sure injector resistor pack and all BS sensors are connected (coolant temp sensor in particular; can keep car from starting).

+1 The turbo doesn't feed the motor until your boosting. Until then, its basically an NT engine.

Op- have you ran a compression test? That would be my next step.

Agreed, this is very true at idle/start. I was more so reffering to the car's driveability. It def will not run properly like that on a factory tune, but one thing at a time. Needs to start before it can drive. My apologies for jumping the gun on that one.

It will actually run just fine. IT will just be a little rich under a load. I've got a turbine housing with the turbine side welded shut that i've ran on a few cars with blown turbo's. It will bolt to the manifold, o2 hosing and exhaust and eliminates the turbo. If you run a non turbo intake pipe with the turbo maf than it will run fine, no cutting out or anything like that.

I agree with the compression test first. Sounds like cam timing is way off and its not opening valve when it should to draw air in. I dont think that when cranking though it really pulls enough air in to be able to feel.

I've been 100% convinced that the head had to come off but not 100% convinced it's the gasket. Looking forward to hearing what you find after you get the head off.
