Hello, I have a 6 bolt 92 Eagle talon tsi. Recently purchased a xtd stage 4 1992 Eagle talon FWD clutch kit, everythings all together for the 2nd time and the starter can't reach the flywheel? Are the starters any different from AWD to FWD? Can I get a longer one? What do I do? Thank you

Did you reuse the stock flywheel or a replacement flywheel. did you replace the main bearing and use the guide pin that comes with kit. Its either the starter is faulty or something its not lined up correctly or if you used an aftermarket flywheel maybe different size so starter will not reach the after market flywheel should be the same size as the stock flywheel. Let me know whats going on seems like something that can be fixed.

If the clutch kit came with a flywheel most likely they gave you the wrong parts. The starters are the same, 1g or 2g. Its the flywheels that are different. The awd is smaller and won't catch when bolted to a fwd motor.

I totally agree with what's been said. I always compare the new and the old there will be differences in the wear obviously but the sizes and functions should not be alter to much especially on flywheels. The materials can be different but the overall diameter can not be altered to much or at all. just because it bolts on doesn't mean its the right one for your car. I get wrong parts all the time from the auto parts stores so got to be careful to inspect and compare.

Thank you everyone for the quick replies. It was an aluminum flywheel that came with the clutch kid from xtd. It said it was a front wheel drive fly wheel and when I compared it to the stock one they seemed comparable in everything but weight and wear. It's been taken apart and re aligned and it still doesn't reach. What you guys recommend I do first?

Sorry, I've done some more digging and I've found that sometimes the bolts that come with this flywheel kit are too short? Apparently "I have the combo I mentioned for now and it is fine with no issues. The flywheel in the other hand gave me a few issues so here goes, 1 week after torque and install the bolts backed out and the flywheel just span, so I ordered FP's long bolt kit(do it now) and that Beetch stayed on." Does this sound like my problem before I rip it apart and order them?

Btw when I hit the key the starter spins really fast and the engine doesn't turn over.

Guys , I'm having the same issue. My starter is indeed turning but not engaging the flywheel , it started fine just a few weeks ago until a bad starter blew my ignition fuse.

Today I got the new starter on , new fuse , new battery , jumped her from the truck and she started right up.

I let her idle for roughly 5 min , shut her off to finish under the hood. Went to start her back up and starter is spinning like hell but still not engaging. I checked the starter , it's the same as my old one. It's a fidanza n/t fly in the n/t trans. As we all know non turbos are front wheel drive , so yes I'm sure I have the right fly and the right starter.

I'm at a loss guys , she starts ONLY if I crank the motor by hand a few times , then jump it.

I checked my battery voltage and its fine. WTF

So she is turning over?

Yes but only with a battery jump and and a rotation of the crank.

As stated I just put a new battery , starter , (both of which were tested prior to instal) and ignition fuse in.

Broken flywheel tooth maybe ? When I had the starter pulled I had my father rotate the crank while I feel on the fly , I felt no teeth missing but I suppose I could of missed one.

I'm hoping to find a solution , if not than I'm planning to pull the tranny Friday.

Check voltage at the starter? Any crankshaft end play?

Check the bendix in the starter, it may not be kicking out to engage the flywheel, I have had them go bad in 2 starts.

You check this thread out? Let's clean up this guy's thread here. If I had to put money on your car, I would say that starter is failing a voltage drop test.

I have indeed read that before :thumb:
However I have fuel , I have ignition , she'll start and run just like normal. I COULD push start it and just say to hell with it but I just won't be that peppy tomorrow at 5 am in the 10degree weather.

I got the starter pulled , the bendix feels a bit sticky.
I'm gonna work it some and get it closer to room temp then give it a try.

This is the 2nd starter I've got , the first one burnt the solenoid.

Have a parts store test it or hook a set of cables up to it. The Bendix can still shoot out but might draw too many amps in doing so.

I'm with Bogus here, It sounds more like your starter is not engaging.

A bad flywheel (loos teeth) can do the same thing, A good way to verify that is by removing the bottom shield of the flywheel (at the bell housing), removing that you can have asses to the flywheel, with the help of a friend by turning the motor while you look at the flywheel teeth.

Check your grounds. Voltage is not the same as amperage. Explains why when you jump stsrt it then it works. Sounds like you also have a bad starter. Especially check the ground at the transmission. If your starter isnt getting what it needs it wont work. Had the trany out recently? Seen many people forget to hookup the ground by the starter.

Paul I made sure all grounds were connected. That was one of the first things I verified. I've put just north of 900 miles on it the past 4-5 months.

I inspected the harness, and the connector clip at the end of the 12v power source for the starter is broken , and a corroded looking. I'm gonna try a new connector & a new starter, I tested this one and its spinning but only kicking out about 1/4".

New starter in , she's spinning just like before but still not engaging the flywheel.
I unbolted the starter but left it connected , connected the ground and tried it outside the car to verify the bendix is extending fully - it is.

I stuck my camera in the starter hole and took a video , after looking I can see marks on the inside of the bell housing from the flywheel teeth contacting it.

Had to screenshot the video.
I've come to the conclusion I need a new flywheel.

I don't understand why it would make contact if I got a non turbo flywheel..

Something I noticed , the n/t fly has 106 teeth , same as the awd.
I wonder if I was sent the wrong flywheel.

I'm having the same exact problem. I have an ACT flywheel part num 600165. I'm running a 96 gst so I have the right flywheel and all the starters are the same for 90-99. I've tried 4 different starters and they would work but make an awful noise and after -28 days it would just not spin the motor. When removing the starter I notice that like only the first 1/8 in of the bendix is making contact with flywheel is there a way to shim the starter to make it closer to the flywheel. I've also checked the starter plate the last 3 digits are 962 which is a fwd plate I'm at a loss
