Hello, I have a 6 bolt 92 Eagle talon tsi. Recently purchased a xtd stage 4 1992 Eagle talon FWD clutch kit, everythings all together for the 2nd time and the starter can't reach the flywheel? Are the starters any different from AWD to FWD? Can I get a longer one? What do I do? Thank you

Luv2rallye the asa info contradicts the statement of awd and fwd starters being different. Are the lengths different by year? If so this doesnt make sense to me as the flywheels are the same across the years awd and fwd respectively (not counting 6bolt 7bolt etc). There is a change of some sort as referenced by the part number change but what is it?

I know I have all the fwd parts I'm supposed to have and according to advance auto the starters are the same from 90-99 only difference is with at and mnl tranny

I'm sorry but I don't know what the difference is in the part number change in Mitsubishi's ASA parts database. Apparently there is some difference based on year (94.01.1-96.09.1 vs 96.09.2-99.04.3). As to the shaft kickout length I was going by post 5 and 6 in my link. When he said the starter isn't reaching far enough I remembered that post.

The flywheel is different, 106 teeth for AWD (smaller) vs. 110 teeth for FWD (larger) but that is accounted for by different starter plates (positioning the starter closer/farther away from the flywheel center to account for different flywheel diameter).[DOUBLEPOST=1415143046][/DOUBLEPOST]Some further thinking after submitting the top half of this post: As to the starter teeth engagement, the different teeth pitch of FWD vs AWD flywheels is negligible considering the diameter of the starter's flywheel engagement gear and the diameter of the flywheel's ring gear, so I now think the same starter should work for either - as long as you have the CORRECT STARTER PLATE (fwd vs awd). And since, as was pointed out, Mitsubishi uses the same starter for AWD and FWD, the starter kickout shaft being longer statement in post 5 and 6 of that link above must be a fluke. He probably had an aftermarket starter where anything is possible (aftermarket trys to make a product that will work in many cars).

I called Mitsubishi about the different starter part numbers and he pointed out that starters for years 94.01.1-96.09.1 are 1.2KWatt, while years 96.09.2-99.04.3 are 1.4KWatt. So this apparently is the difference. That would explain why auto stores (and many tuners) claim the same starter works in all years.
