Ss Turbo Manifold:xs Power?

This site may earn a commission from merchant affiliate links, including eBay, Amazon, and others.

Here is a picture of one of our club members ss autochrome manifold. This happened at 2004 shootout, I don't think he had more than 1,000 miles on this manifold before it started to crack. The hose clamps in the picture were there to keep the rest of the manifold from falling apart on the way home from the shootout. The wastegate mount broke off and landed on the lower ic piping.

This was made by burns stainless for a sand rail but the only time I have seen quality like this is on here was the welding of one of the guys who works at Forced Performance.

The double slip fit helps alot... It allows the metal to move when it heats and expands. Without it bracing the turbo to the block could be bad. No place for things to go when they heat and grow.

You can see in the pic how thin those crappy ebay manifolds are. He even had a reputable fabricator try and fix it for him but it was hopeless. I think by the time he got home the only thing holding the turbo in the car was the emergency hoseclamp support he installed once it was cracked.

Though third hand, a couple local shops that I know have had nothing but terrible experiences with the ss autochrome stuff to the point where they won't even work with the product anymore.

I have yet to see a tubular manifold last more than a summer with out cracking. Archer, SFP, OBX, Pacesetter, all have cracked. Some have been repaired and others have been junked. I would buy the ongreen performance HKS cast knockoff if money wasn't an issue or have a local shop that works with stainless and header experience build a tubular manifold. Either way, there simply isn't a "cheap" reliable upgrade to the mitsu manifold.

Just some info on the XS power manifolds, They do clear a 4 bolt turbine housing. I got one in the mail the other day with a 46mm gate. 95% of the welds looked good But once they got into the collector area on the outside of the manifold it looks like they just stopped welding. And since they cleaned out the inside of the collector and wastegate port they ground it a little to thin and carved a hole in it. So the brand new manifold had a hole in it. It was just big enough to see light through it. I had that welded and also a brace welded for the wastegate. Im also gonna support the turbo from the stock down pipe strap so it can support the weight of the turbo, Not the manifold. I will post up how it does when the car is running in the next coupel of weeks.
