Spraying front case gasket with copper spray

Hello, I need a quick answer. Do I spray both sides of the front case gasket with copper spray? Also the oil filter housing do I spray both sides of the gasket too? Cant forget the water pump gasket... both sides too wit copper spray?

Do I use rtv after copper spray on front case, oil filter housing, and water pump gasket too? If so both sides? Thanks.
 
I did 3 layers of copper spray on both sides of everything you mentioned. And I did not use rtv. Works great.

Ok, how about the oil filter housing and water pump. Copper spray and rtv? or copper spray no rtv?

Also do you know what bolt I will have to use where the ballance belt pulley use to be? The bolt that you have to seal so it doesnt leak. Thanks.
 
Ive never heard of anyone using copper spray for anything other than head gaskets and exhaust stuff. I personally would not trust it. Gray RTV is the best stuff to use IMO.
 
I spray copper spray on both sides of the gasket (just one layer), and use a couple very small dabs of RTV just to help the gaskets stick while I'm bolting them in. Put the RTV near bolt holes that are away from oil passages just in case some oozes out. I do this for all three gaskets you mentioned.
 
Thanks everyone. A couple of people have mentioned to use a small amount of rtv to aid gasket to stick. Was I suppose to wait until spray was completely dry, in other words not sticky? Because I didn't have any issues.

Is there such thing as using too much copper spray? Reason I asked is, I had to respray one side. Since it was previously sprayed I had to peal it off the cardboard. Both sides ended being too much spray and from sticking to the cardboard the surface didn't have a perfect texture. Should I take it back out and redo it? Thanks.
 
I use copper spray for all three of those gaskets as well. I spray one layer on each side. I've assembled 5 or 6 engines over the past few years, and I've never had one of those gaskets fail to seal. And for me, the copper spray has always been sticky enough to hold the gasket in place.

Ditto. I spray every gasket just enough to not be able to see the printing on the paper, both sides, then let it sit for about a minute then I install what ever I'm assembling. Everything from intake gasket, head, exhaust, oil pump and water pump ect... the only place I don't use it is the oil pan (obviously), and exhaust flange gaskets
 
RTV should only be used in a light application, you don't want excess floating around in your engine.
 
The only gasket I use RTV on is the valve cover gasket, and that is only at the problem areas. Just a little dab in corner, and a bit on the "humps"

Copperseal is wonderful stuff though. Especially on exhuast gaskets but if you need the extra assurance I would use it on every gasket I could.
 
I use copper spray on everything as well. I used to do it on the head gasket, but I stopped doing that once I switched over to cometic. As far as the front case gasket goes, I spray both sides, I hang it up on something until the copper spray is tacky, then I hang it on the engine block via the dowel pins.
 
I used the red permatex gasket tack, every beside the hg that gets copper spray. I feel uneasy about copper in/near my oil system. That has worked really well for me. I soaked the gaskets until they are completely red, let them get sticky and then apply part.
 
I have a few more questions...

What if I put on too much is that okay? The gasket started to curl from too much I put on. Will that create the front case to generate too much heat? When I placed it on a piece of card board it started to stick to it, so ipeeled it off and resprayed it. When I peeled it off, it created a certain texture from being peeled from the card board. Should I take the front case back off and redo it? I don't want it to leak or have contaminants on the gasket. How do I go about redoing that? Its probably going to be a Pita to get that gasket off the block and clean properly since I have all the bearings,crank, and seals freshly installed with assembly lube. I don't want to contaminate all the things I already have installed. Also since it took me a while to torque the oil pump sprocket on, the gasket was on the block for a while before I was able to install the front case on there. Is it okay too if I had to untorque all the bolts and retorqued back to specs? I feel like such an idiot! :(

I used the bolt that used to hold the front BS sprocket to the BS. IT fits perfect in the old pulley position, and tightens down to seal up nice. I also used a copper crush washer to ensure a good seal.
