speedo problem help

Ok I have a 96 TSI FWD the motor is a 7bolt out of a 94 auto the trans is from a 97. I had a Quaife LSD installed and after a hard launch and some wheel hop the speedo stopped working. I'm not sure what would have caused it to stop working. If anyone has some detailed pictures of the sensor assy or any cables it would help me out a great deal thanks.

If you didn't reinstall the metal clip that holds the sensor's connector in place, perhaps it just popped off.

so i found the connector broken and i believe the sensor is broken off. i'll post pics later

That sucks dude. Id check for sure for any internal damage in the trans where the speedo goes in at. I had issues with my gst that i had the gears that spin the speedo gear got Fd up. I hit a damn pot hole in the road because my town is to cheap to fix them. Best of luck sir and i hope it doesn't end up anything major

The '97-'99 speedo gear is a different diameter than the '95-'96 speedo gear.

I was just recently battling this same issue after a Shep trans install back in April. My speedo would quit working after about 250 miles of use, which messes with a lot if you've got 2-step or ALS setup through ECMLink. After I replaced it the first time I noticed a flat side on the gear (which is nylon) so I replaced it with a new one, same thing happened a week later. I finally called Shep and asked him what the problem could be, he mentioned that they might have installed a earlier ('95-'96) drive gear which requires the earlier ('95-'96) speedometer gear, in my '99 GSX transmission.

Luckily, all the headache of trying to figure out why my speedo wasn't working the gear didn't drop off into the trans. Hopefully you find that yours isn't actually in the transmission either and just needs the correct speedometer gear for the VSS.

I know this isn't really helpful in a technical aspect, but if you need a temp speedo fix and have a GPS the speed reading on those are more accurate than your standard speedometer on your average car. Defiantly more accurate than the DSM one too.

Just something to think about.

Remember, the '95-'96 speedo GEAR is different than the '97-'99, not the sensor though.

1997 eclipse 420a auto trans i have been reading on here where the speedo sen is at on the trans. But when i took off my battery tray and looked around where the rear motor mont is i can not see it. Can someone help me loc it. My speed on my dash is about 50mph high and was told it might be the prob.

Haha. Lucky you I just pulled my 2g N/T transmission TODAY. I've never seen the N/T auto trans but the N/T manual trans speedo sensor sits right next to the rear motor mount.

The sensor in that picture is broken, the top half with the sensor is broken from the bottom half with the gear.

Ok. That's how my sensor looks.

So, given this information, I can pull out the old broken piece and install my new setup?

Yes you will need a new sensor. You can re use the gear, but just fine a different sensor housing. You can find out out of a galant from a salvage yard for next to nothing than just swap in your gear and shaft.

I already purchased a whole new sensor that came with a gear. I was just curious as to how I got the old one out with out breaking or damaging, since the housing was missing. But if removing the old gear is as easy as a little tug, I should be able to finally have some speedo this evening.

There is a 10mm head bolt holding it in. Remove the bolt and MAKE SURE that you don't drop it in the hole. From there it should come out rather easy.

Ok, I hate to bring this back up. But....the bolt holding my sensor in is FLUSH with the rear mount. So do I need to remove the rear mount to remove the old sensor? Or am I missing something here?

I have reached down in there and felt it first hand, and the one side of the bolt is flush with the mount, thus I cannot get the socket head on it.

Sounds like your mount is messed up. It should not be like that. You may have to loosen it.
