Ive had my new gsx (its a 90 so it has the worst of the 1g trans) for about a month now and when i drove home 2 hours fromm the place that i bought it to my house it ran absolutely perfect.. then the next day i was pulling out of the driveway and it popped out of first gear..

Now it barley wants to go into first it usually takes a few tries to get it to stay in.. and second gear is basically not there it rarely ever goes into 2nd.. then a few weeks later my reverse completely locked out like there was nothing there at all, then last night i tried to put reverse in, and it went right in?

Im so confused on whats happening.. is it my shifter cables that are messed up? Is the trans gears all starting to go bad?

I have a new transmission that i bought off a part out car its a 91 tranny so it should work better than the 90 trans im just waiting to get a new clutch and 23 spline t case before i put the new one in

I also have a '90 GSX and the transaxle is fine, was there some acknowledged difference from the later 1G that caused you to buy the '91 -- not aware of anything myself. (Can't remember when the transfer shaft changed from 22 to 23 spline -- 1Gb or 2G?, makes no difference to performance though!) In any case, it could be associated with your transmission fluid, do you know what's in there, and do you know if it's full? If it isn't full don't keep driving it until it is. Also, don't force your shifts, allow the synchronizers to do their job, overriding them tends to kill them.

i moved the gear manually and they do the same thing as if the cables were still hooked up.. and ya the fluid is full.. and the only one that i could find quickly was my friends trans out of a 91 so i picked that one up

Do a search for putting a 91+ trans into a 90. U have to do something to make it shift correct cause of the shifter base, cable length and bracket angle on the trans. Or its vice versa. 90 into a 91+. I don't remember, but I should cause I've put 3 different 90 trannies in my 92 GSX. ROFL

If it's doing the SAME THING as when the cables are hooked up. (some failed to notice this) then it's not the linkage. There is a bolt (don't ask which I don't remember) reading about in the trans that if it gets lose it can cause the shifter to pop out of gear. I think there's something on it on the VFAQ page, keep that in mind and do some searching.

I don't know why people say the 90 trans is bad. They have a very nice gear-set in them and a free HD 3-4 hub assembly. They are very strong, but have old style synchros which can be problematic.

It sounds like a cable issue to me as well. The cables are not designed to push and when you go to 2nd, 4th or Reverse the cable has to push the shift shaft arm on the trans. To allow for the cable to do this, they added steel tubes along the cable ends to prevent it from bending. I would guess your cable has popped one of these tubes off its crimped spot and now your cable is unable to apply the right amount of pressure to the arm to fully engage the gears.
