Ok, so i did my first clutch job on my 98 gsx (hated it the whole time) and after two days of getting mad and throwing wrenches and alot of select words, i finished it up...i thought. The clutch pedal is now really soft (i bled it and everything) and is slow on the release, and to top it all off, my car now will not start...i think something might have happened with the starter i.e. a wire disconnected somehow, but, when i turn my key it sounds like it tries to engage and doesnt....any ideas? should i just tear it all apart and redo everything?

And if your read this and are anywhere near seattle please please PLEASE come help me...ill supply the beer.

So along with the clutch what else did you replace? Clutch fork? pivot ball? If you didn't did you shim the pivot ball and make sure the the fork was towards the drivers side or in the middle when you put the trans back on?

Is your slave or master cylinder leaking?

Did you adjust the clutch rod?

If you can hear the starter solenoid popping out then it's not catching the teeth on the flywheel, how worn out were the teeth on the flywheel?

I just got a stock clutch replacement kit from napa. It came with a clutch, pressure plate and what i believe is the throwout bearing? (the one on the shaft in the tranny) Anyways...those are what i replaced. I didnt shim the pivot ball or make sure it was in any certain position as this is my first dsm clutch and didnt know i was supposed to and i didnt adjust the clutch rod either. I checked for leaks and there are none. I'm going back to working on it tomorrow to remove the starter and make sure all the connections are correct because i dont think im getting any juice to it. Can you give me some info on adjusting the fork and rod or get me the link for the vfaq to it? (i suck at looking stuff up on this site, i never find what im looking for).

Thanks,
Richard

Google is your friend too.. Clutch jobs arent really bad, not sure why you were having such a hard time. You say now it doesnt start, and "tries" to engage?? Like you can hear the solenoid pop out? Or it spins, or turns the motor over slowly??? My clutch has ALWAYS felt soft. Even with my upgraded clutch. Make sure to watch this video and get your adjustment done correctly..

Make sure the battery is grounded properly (on a 1g 1 ground goes to the firewall and the other to the starter bolt on the transmission). Also check the starter with a multimeter to make sure it is getting voltage when cranking.

If it makes you feel any better when I installed my LSD I had to pull the transmission 3 times in 2 days to get everything straight. Hang in there!
