So I have a 94 talon tsi. It has several mods done to it, and the stock boost gauge is wired up to read Knock. So every once in a while when I'm driving the stock boost gauge spikes (reading knock) and the car has like no power when this happens. Then it goes away after a min. This happens under normal driving conditions, and sometimes when I try and accelerate. When it happens I let off the gas because I'm sure its not good.. But my question is what is causing this to randomly happen? Some days it happens alot, other days it never happens, or may not happen for weeks at a time. .. So I'll list my mods so that maybe that will help. Also the car is an auto.

16g turbo
680cc injectors
ECU Chip tune
2g Maf
2.5 intercooler pipes/ Big front mount IC
Full 3in. exhaust
Tubular manifold
3in. o2 housing with open dump
255 Walbro pump

I'm probably forgetting somethings, but thats most of it. So if anyone has any insight on whats causing my issue please let me know!! Thanks.

I agree with enriquez, even though I don't have one, I've regretted selling some things before just to have to purchase them again, and then when you want it that second time, it's hard to find and even more expensive!

Why not drive the talon for a daily :) I love driving my GST as a daily, decent gas mileage, handles well in the snow, plus when I drive the girlfriends car i'm like awwww this is so slow, keeping me from pulling out into spots I usually could!!

i just dont want to daily the talon to keep the miles off of it. also when I want to work on it i'll need something reliable to drive around. plus i have a 6 month old son, and putting the car seat in the back of the talon is a PITA!!

Ok so back to my phantom knock issue. I've been working on the car for several hours trying to track down the issue. Now that it's really hot out it's gotten worse. It was happening every time I try and accelerate. So got a new knock sensor and that seemed to only help a little. Still happens but not every time I touch the gas. Got new spark plugs and the car runs better but didn't help with the phantom knock. I've got it pin pointed to the fact that it only happens at right around 2500 RPMs. I've gone through and tightened down everything I could think of. Any other ideas? Could the heat be part of the issue? Seeing as it's gotten a ton worse now that it's hot outside?

Loosen the sensor up. Ia it tightened to proper spec.....I was thinking just 16frlbs. Just a thought. And I can't get a torque wrench on mine either :/

I didn't tighten it much. But listen to this! I heat wrapped my tubular manifold and also took off my air filter to see if maybe it's not getting enough air. Went for a drive and NO kNOCK!!! But only time will tell if that fixed it

Ok I jinxed myself. It was driving great for a long time with no issues, best it's ever ran. Stopped at Walmart to get a few things. Came back out to the car and started driving and phantom knock BAD!!! UGH!!! It's making me think heat soak??? The upper IC pipe that goes to the throttle body isn't wrapped and it get really hot. Thoughts?

Well heat isn't friendly to the mixture but it shouldn't get that hot to effect it. Are you heat soaking the intercooler? How about poppn the hood and free revving it to see if you can hear any rattle at all that the sensor could be picking up? And I hate it when you think you finally fixed something and then it comes back or worse....I thought I fixed the horrible fuel cut my 98 TSI had and it ran GREAT, once...then it got a rod knock. Your deal at least comes and goes so with patience your gonna find it. I won't be able to get rid of my knock...or easily anyway. Keep track of everything you do and it will work out

What was the solution to your problem???

Well good job. Pat yourself on the back!!! Very glad its putting a smile on your face now! :D

Well I would say yes it was real knock since it was temp related. I am so happy for you. Oh if I could make my "definite" knock go away that easy. Looking at buying my son's short block for the 98 and rebuilding the head on my engine in it so I can just DRIVE a turbo car. My 90 is my fast, street/strip car and I am about a month away working 6 days a week! :thumb:

Oh yeah LOL! Just as simple as cutting a hole in the hood LOL. Well I also added another slim fan, and heat wrapped my manifold. The upper IC pipe still gets pretty hot, not sure how to fix that. I read threads people saying to wrap it and other people say no don't wrap it. I think wrapping it would help keep the cold air in and really hot air out.

My opinion on my car is if it was getting that hot, is it from external heat or internal heat? Then if it was external I would wrap it, you can always unwrap it. I have wanted that "EVO" hood look for the reason of heat and I have an extra hood sooo.....I need to do it. How did you make yours? There is another thread on here right now with that done and I like it. Someone asked about bad weather and that "hole" in the hood and got a cool reply that a simple magnetic sign would flop on there super easy and would make it driveable in all weather.

It's simple. Cut the design that you want. Get the grill style you want. I used small vac. Line split down the middle for the edge molding. Then used the flat head bolts through the hood and through the grill and used wing nuts so they are easy on and off. Also just use a simple piece of plastic with the same bolt holes. If it's gonna rain just pop the hood and attach the plastic cover. And I think the heat on my upper IC pipe is all external. It basically touches the radiator and then engine bay heat and heat from the throttle body is where it's the hottest. Need a spacer maybe.
