Solid tensioner

To chime in, I've experienced no problems thus far. Granted my car isn't daily driven, it's held up well to over 500hp. No adjustment needed & going on 700+ miles.

Also, I cut out the timing belt cover over the tensioner to make adjustments a snap.

That is the entire point here. It's spiffy for a track car. Not spiffy for a street car.

BLE Solid Tensioner: Mitsubishi Eclipse 90-99

Who is running one and how good is it?

BTW: this is a pic of what i am talking about:

I am so glad, I cleaned all the random/not needed accessories from my engine bay, and went to the basic necessities. Time to get it running and tuck the wiring.

1500 miles and going strong. Seriously now how exactly can this part fail anyway??? Its a frickin bolt through a billet housing. So if it doesnt break its going to work!!

The stock tensioner DOES NOT absorb ANY oscillations. All it does is take up slack as the belt stretches. Perfect for a DD that doesnt get the attention our cars do. Anyway long story short mine works great havent had any issues yet!!

Do you have an update for us? And you said after 1500 miles and still going strong, does that mean you haven't had to adjust? Maybe this is a dead/moot point, but I'd like to know before I put this on my next rebuild.

I have 5 miles on mine, just got done putting the motor back into my vr4, it's easy to use and never has to be replaced, I"ll chime in after more miles, oh yha but the engines been ran equivalent to 100 miles on idle atleast due to full tank going down to half, I just got back from smashing and it's still running aha.

That's what I thought. Surely with every tank of gas. And it'll likely need adjustment as well... but just the right amount.

Is anyone using one?

I had a friend that used one and if you don't know how to correctly keep the tension you'll do one of two things........get it too tight and smoke the timing belt in two as he did or too loose and jump time. I agree with everyone who says if it ain't broke don'tfix it. I think the stock ones are money well spent in the long run. Just my 2 cents!

The solid tensioner seems to have become the new noob race part to have. They see "race only!" and want to stick it on their daily driver. Then the few that actually have some sense come to tuners and dismiss the hundred posts disproving them and keep asking for proof they work and then start drooling the second one person says they're running it and hasn't grenaded the motor yet. Wise up kids, it's really not for you.

The 1.8 engine runs fine with out a hydrolic tensioner !!!!!!!! I am going to build a soild tensioner out of my old hydrolic tensioner and see what happens. The only problem I see is from the belt streching to much.

What happened to the guys who have tried it? I imagine that even if it had to be tightened every 5000 miles it is still doing a good job because it would be one of those things you have to do like changing your oil or something.

I really want to know what happened to this solid tensioner thing. Did the guys who ended up using this thing have problems, like having to retighten it every month or so?

From what ive read its great for track cars and drag cars but for a DD its not a great idea, and even though im going track orientated im still not going to use it myself.

Just learn how to set a stock tensioner and you won't ever need one of these. I have been working on these cars for 15 years and have yet to have a timing belt skip.

LOL i know how to set a stock tensioner, i was just curious :sneaky:

I’ve talked to a few guys over at Ostar Motorsports & they all swear by it for their cars, I just made the switch. Was told to set the belt tension based at high rpm & to just use a paint marker to ensure the bolt doesn’t move and keep an eye on it from time to time. Could probably use a lock washer to add extra security.
