Solid tensioner

Anyone see in the december issue of modified mag the add from dynamic turbo? Its a new product from BLE solid timing belt tensioner. Its a 2 bolt bracket to bolt it as normal with a bolt and a lock nut as the tensioner rod. How good of an idea can this be?

Sounds as worthwhile as solid lifters on a DSM. If you're at that level of tuning, perhaps. On the street, daily? Doubtful.

Nice that it's good for 1400hp, though. That ought to come in real handy. Nearly as much as 10,000 RPM.

That's what I thought. Surely with every tank of gas. And it'll likely need adjustment as well... but just the right amount.

I am in the process of rebuilding my engine right now, and for the most part I'm using OEM parts (All timing components are Mitsu parts except for the Greddy T-belt). I know that it is well lamented that when doing an engine build to use Mitsubishi parts, and I agree this company knew what it was doing when I designed and built this engine. For the record I have seen a lot of posts go down in flames when you mention eBay, and I would like that not become the over shadowing topic for this thread; so lets just say some people like and some don't! Alright so I was searching eBay for a set of valve guides just to see what brands and how much they were going for over/under what the retailers are selling them for and I came across this - eBay Motors: 4G63 Solid Timing Tensioner -Eclipse/Talon/Laser/DSM/1G (item 250171642431 end time Nov-30-07 20:17:25 PST). I was wondering what everybody thought about this, has anybody come across this and used it? Just thought it might be worth discussing. Thanks.

Thanks, when I was doing the search I was looking for "timing tensioner". Still nobody is using it, but who wants to have to adjust there t-belt every time they go for a ride.

This has been discussed before and the general consensus is that a stock autotensioner acts as a sort of "dampener" (as in suspension) for the timing belt system. Any movement / vibration in the engine during operation is compensated for on the autotensioner system. Once you remove that ability to adjust, you find yourself in a hard pressed place. IMO, solid tensioners are good for track only type cars.

Honda B series use a manual tensioner. The H22 does not, its popular to swap to a manual tensioner because the hydraulic one is prone to failure. They don't require frequent adjustment of tension at all. I was surprised how loose they run without problems, and maybe that is why they don't have quite the timing belt issues we do.

Hondas are no better than DSMs in the timing belt department. There really is nothing at all wrong with the DSM timing belt system. As long as the proper maintenance is done it's really hard to have a disaster. extended neglect is pretty much the only way to induce failure.

One of the many ways in which Honda information is irrelevant to the DSM world. Note how the Honda belt nearly folds-in over on itself in its routing. DSMs have nowhere near the amount of retention in their path. While the Honda has more than 180° and half the crank sprocket teeth driving, DSMs have about 125° and fifteen teeth doing the driving. They need the shock absorption and tension adjusting more than a Honda.

Well I would have to agree with the "why" question. I have had no problems with the timing belt and tensioning system on a DSM. However I have purchased several thousand dollars of stuff, from repairing peoples cars who did, but in 100% of the cases it was from lack of maintenance, or stupidity.

The purpose of the auto-tensioner is well to automatically compensate for the stretching of the timing belt due to wear. This wear is caused from the driven gear (crankshaft) continuously pulling the belt around it self. Since the belt is connected to several other components I.E. the camshafts and oil pump, they impose a severe and variable load on the timing belt. Acceleration, deceleration, engine braking and harmonic vibration all cause the belt to stretch and break down over time and use. The manufacturer set a specific pre-load valve to the timing belt, the auto tensioner's purpose is to maintain this pre-load value on the timing belt.

I have known people to use or make there own solid tensioners, and they do work, but you will need to re-set the tensioner pulley every so often. It is kind of like having solid lifters on a V-8 back in the day. Except the lifters clattered, loose timing belts wreak havoc.

I am not sure if I believe that the auto-tensioner dampens vibrations, since those vibrations would have to be transmitted to the tensioner via the timing belt, which is compliant to begin with.

Manual tensioners are nothing new, but to DSM's maybe they are. In ALL honda motorcycles that we set up for racing ( or street when the stockers go out) we put APE brand manual tentsioners in them. I've NEVER had an issue with teh DSM one, but if you were makinghte type of power to need solid lifters this might actually be usefull ( along with a kevlar belt ), But i have to Agree with Defiant, it would pretty much be waste on a DD car IMO.

The B-series engine's don't use a solid tensioner, they have an adjustable pulley(like our engines) with a spring attached to it. The spring is what keeps the tension, same idea as the hydraulic tensioner on our cars, it's just implemented differently.

I think there's more wear from erosion and compression of the teeth than stretching of the timing belt. Failure is much more common at the root of the teeth than of the belt itself- although that, in turn, will also often destroy the belt and destroy the evidence.

I am just going to use it and notice a access panel in the cover so i can get to the solid tensioner if i ever have to check it.

Since there are motors with it that run both fine and not and ones that run without it that run fine or not. I cannot get a answer from someone that HAS IT, not what they heard or there thought or opinions on it, and now it has turned into a it wont work or it will.

I just check it after 50-100-250-500-1000 miles- and ever oil change. Ill just leave my top cover off to make it easy to check the tension on the belt.
