hey guys,
I just finished installing a new turbo manifold and there is smoke coming from it after I start the car. Could this be from the bolts not being tight?

If the manifold coated in anything or if you used anything on the gaskets it may smoke the first couple of times but not alot. Also if it was wrapped because my wrap smoked the first time i started my car but not alot.

If its a brand new manifold, it should smoke because the coat is burning off.
That's how my FP manifold smoked when it was started.

My manifold smoked for awhile when I installed it. Its mainly the oil, sweat, grease, factory coating, etc. After it runs for a little while it will all burn off. Is it a tubular manifold?

would being stainless steel cause it to smoke? im not sure what you mean by if its wrapped

99.9% of the time its the oil and the coating thats on it. My pickup truck always smoke from the manifold due to a leaking valve cover gasket. (i know,im just being lazy).

this is what mine looks like

If you installed everything as per the FSM, using anti-sieze on the bolt/stud threads, it will smoke for a few minutes as it heats up too. Or, considering you got a cheap tubular manifold, possibly an exhaust leak at one of the cracked/bad welds? :idontknow:

If you wrapped it in exhaust wrap but you didn't so that doesn't matter. Just let it run its new so it will smoke a little. Make sure all the bolts are tight enough and it's not leaking at any of the gaskets.

well I got this manifold with the car when i traded it for my supra so I dont kn ow much about dsms yet but youre not the first person to tell me that those manifolds are junk. Im just using it so I can drive it until i get a better manifold.

Those manifolds are pricey, don't get me wrong, the problem is that it's an entry level tubular so the welds crack very easily. Some people have good luck with them and others don't, there just isn't much quality control from one to the other.

What color is the smoke and what does it smell like? Just answering those two things you should be able to quickly narrow it down.

i only turned it on for about 30 seconds, it was almost like clear steam but I could barely see it since there was a little white.

Even stainless will smoke a little on initial heat cycle. Once it's up to temp, and everything burns off it shouldn't do it anymore.

you traded a gst for a supra? I hope it wasn't the round body style, anyways when he says wrapped... he means header wrap to keep heat from radiating from the exhaust mani.

chances are its just all the oils, grease and grunge that accumulated on the manifold from your hands during install...

It will smoke for a few minutes maybe longer on the first start up. My Forced Performance manifold smoked a good 10 mins on the fist start up. If all bold are tight then let it run and see how it goes.

LOL it was an mk3 supra which is the body style before the 93-98 body. the only reason I traded is because it had a warped head and I didnt have enough money to rebuild. so, i traded for a running 95 gst w/ a 16g turbo. the only thing wrong is this manifold and I still found a way to make it stressful..
