So I recently noticed my exhaust is letting out smoke. It never did this before now but I used to have a cat. From all the resrarch I have done it is either rings, valve stem seals, or overly rich fuel condensing.

I took the oil filler cap off and plugged the pcv and was not getting any/much pressure coming out of the hole. Compression is good across the board.

Now, the smoke appears under the following conditions:

- initial start up and idle
- deceleration (vac. Approx 25inHg)

Does not appear:

-warm when idling
-normal driving (in vac.)
-normal driving in boost
-WOT in boost

Mods are:

-275cc injectors
-Custom turbo
-Hollow cat

It was shortly after the cat delete I started noticing the smoke.

Any ideas?

Thanks in advance.

Well, since your compression is good it is more than likely going to be your valve stem seals.

Is the smoke blue, or is black and sooty?

Primarily white with a tinge of blue/grey, smells like pungent hell.

Well i would personally look at valve stem seals..Even though you did a compression test(and passed) they could still be going. my old dsm would burn oil really bad at startups but once warm, nothing unless idling forever. Also what about the turbo?? what boost are you running on N/T pistons id hope nothing more then 10 unless you have link. Which brings up what are you tuning with? and finally 275? those seem way to small to boost anything over like 5psi but don't quote me on that.

I can't run link that's for you mitsu boys. I'm running 5psi. And the problem was fuel. My fpr went and with 275cc inj. Was flooding the engine.

I acyually am running the stocker now. I see you are unfamiliar with boosting a 420. Its ok, I'm used to the 4g63 guys giving bad info and not understanding the differences.

The reason my ijectors are soo small is that at 5psi of boost my fuel pressure is around 110psi.

That and I took off my missing link. Between that massive vaccum link and 60psi fuel pressure at idle my car was drowning. I replaced my fpr, put stock injectors back in, removed my missing link and now all is well...ish...

I didn't want to sound like I was attacking you. As of late I have been getting talked down to by a few 4g guys calling my motor trash and telling me to buy a 4g. The whole 420a<4g63 routine.

my teacher says that a 420A is stonger then a 4g.... i bet the reasons people like the 4g better is just ### in turbo form, it is very strong and powerful, but my teacher took a 420A on stock internals i believe boosted it 10 psi @ 140,000 miles and put down 210hp AT THE WHEELS.. in a neon R/T. was nice.

He said the bottem end is stronger, but i think the 4g hs a stronger top end.

BTW i dont think he even replaced the pistons in it LOL..... man 10 psi on non-turbo pistons....

Its chill man no offence taken ive seen people attacking eachother on this site for almost 3 years.. i just finally decided to jon and start helping LOL.

LOL thats funny. Ask him if it were stronger why didnt they just kill the 4g and start making just the 420. Ive read the 420a's are chrysler made but even if so theyd have moved it to the evos if it was stronger. Id honestly have to say thats is untrue the 4gs have been known to handle great boosts levels on N/t pistons its just all about the tune.. a Stock 7.8to1 1g block could blow up after 10psi if the tune is way off where a 420 may handle 16 or more on a good tune..Im not dogging on the 420 i just dont really think that it is stronger maby someone else will chym in whos built both. Does he have a way to log it? all because its running now doesnt mean its not detonating and tearing that motor apart. I wouldn't boost more then 10 either without a way to watch knock. If i was you just for safty purposes start looking for lower compression pistons id rather pay for those then pay for an entire knew block because i detonated and pushed the rod or piston out the side of the block. If not screw it turn the boost up and run it till she goes:hellyeah:. then sell her and buy a 4g ### il tell you that 10psi may be enough for now. but boost is like crack itll never be enough:D

I'm not saying the 420a is stronger. There are more 4g's out there with soo much power. My point is that the 420a doesn't automatically mean that its not worth building and its trash. At the meet I go to I told them I wanted a twin scroll manifold and some one said just sell it and don't waste your money.

There is soo much hate for the 420a on this forum. It's sad really.

He just said to sell it because you will probably spend more money for less power in the long run. But, to each his own :thumb:. Good luck with your build.

I agree. these forums seem to be full of people who love to hate on others, whether it be a honda, 420a, 3rd gen eclipse ect. even hating on others with the 4g63 because they ask a crap question or they do a mod wrong.. But what do i know, all those haters helped build the dsm its self so they know it all.:thumb:

But I am only looking for 300 whp at most. Not exactly a huge undertaking for any engine. My main focus is handling and low turbo lag. I am going to run 9.8 - 9.5 compression any ways. So huge hp numbers are not in my future.

I promise you that 300 will get old quick. My old Gst was completely stock. i said the same think 300 will be enough just enough power to pull on the vettes around town. Well sold that got my gsx, finished the rebuild, started street tuning i run 22psi. theres no AWD dyno hear in idaho so i cant get exact numbers but im sure im putting at least 300 to the wheels, i eat the vettes and sti around hear all day like there sitting still. I can say other then the fact this hp is nice because im not ruining my tranny, tranfer, or rear end and it still does the trick, im already saving up for a new build LOL boost is the car mans crack. oh i also run 2g pistons compression ratio is 8.6to1 i believe LOL i forgot to add that to my mod list

If I want more power ill go awd. But this one is a mountain car.

Ya AWD is the s*** man. My gst was such a winch to keep traction with and it was barely modded. My gsx is way better when it comes 2 handling and traction. So your planning on getting a gsx/tsi and keeping your 420a?? LOL youll have to let us know which one you think is better when you get the other car.

going back to the original question: with the start up and idle smoking points to valve seals or guides with issues and when you deaccelerate, the vacuum really climbs up in the chamber which will pull oil past tired guides and seals then gets burned off.

Some areas to look at... - good luck DSM

Awd for the win.

Also problem is solved and it was over fueled but thanks for the advice the same.

What fpr were you running before? And idk about dsms but from what I know the 275cc's are good for about 210whp in b series hondas before they max out.

What color is the smoke???? If it has a blue tint to it then your burning oil

Seriously, being new doesn't mean you can't read.

The problem was I had 275cc injectors un tuned and my fpr went, so I was running 75+ psi at idle and my computer couldn't compensate.
