Ok I just replaced my Valve cover, I leaked oil all over my engine bay which is somewhat whats causing the smell im pretty sure. When I do a cold start i get some white smoke, more as a rev. And then it goes away, then once in a while it will start to smoke a bit again. Any ideas?

Edit: Its smoking alot more now, when idling there isnt much, but if I rev up it smokes and it comes down below 2. Smoke is white

no coolant or water in my oil... no overheating, no loss of coolant.
and whats the difference between wet and dry?

60 Miles? Well I cant really drive like this, Cops will be on my ass LOL

Edit: I ran the car.. Got up to normal operating temp with no smoke... Then my Temp went up to 248C and it started smoking heavily. Overheats more as i rev... Head Gasket?

Edit: Just noticed Im leaking alot of oil from the turbo, I probably forgot to tighten something, but would that cause my overheating?

it shouldnt get above 210 and not tightening an oil line wouldnt cause it to smoke if it got up to 248 degrees i put my money on a head gasket how bad is it smoking when it does is it thick white smoke and does it smell sweet

i jut watched the video and your head might be cracked i did heads on a chevy just a little bit ago and it did about the same thing but we did a cylinder leakage test and saw it was cracked the only way to find out would be to tear it apart and have it magnafluxed at a shop

YouTube - How To Tell If Your Head Gasket Is Blown

There's 3 car guys on youtube I trust:

Here is another method found on this youtube page. Read the uploader comment and the highest rated comment taken out of context here:
One thing I would try that I picked up from davidsfarm Is too start the engine up cold in the morning put your foot on the brake and hit the gas not redlining but get the RPM's around 1500-2000 for 20 seconds, shut the engine off right after and pull the cap if you got high pressure in the coolant system its def exhaust gases getting in through the head gasket because there should be no pressure when cold. Hope this helps.

I know that not tightening an oil line would not cause smoking I meant its causing my oil leak

No a cylinder leakage test pressurizes the cylinder while its on tdc ( or top dead center for you) and checks for leaks and how much in percent

Heres the deal guys, I lifted the car and found that the bolts on the oil line on the turbo were loose, tightened them and the oil leak stopped im pretty sure.. Let the car run for about 15 min.. normal operating temp was reached and it was idling fine.. No smoke! So I took it for a drive.. Drove fine for about 5 min then little bit of smoke started.. Then as I revved higher more smoke came.. As i revved higher my Temp also rose.. However Car was running fine driving felt normal Boosting felt normal.. Still no Coolant in the oil. What do you guys think..

Edit: Also, I think the fan in front of my Exhaust Mani is NOT turning on..

Edit: And this.. Could the hose just be loose?

Just did another run.. Fixed all leaks.. No over heating.. Still a bit of smoking after i started driving., Not sure guys -_-

If it is still getting hotter and hotter i would still say its a head gasket or cracked head is it going through antifreeze and does it cool when u start driving if it doesnt cool when u drive it something is wrong but with how much smoke was coming out of the exhaust i still think its a head gasket

Just checking in on the situation.
I have the very same leak coming from there. But I'm not smoking? Odd!

I moved the clip back a bit after it cooled off and I think it solved the problem..

I am no longer overheating.. Just a few leaks(user error) and smoke when i drive, not when idling.. Before I swapped the turbo I smoked constantly..

Might still have a bit of oil/antifreeze in the exhaust yet, while driving it should burn whatever is still in it, I had the same problem a week ago, scratching my head..... thinking about pulling head off, mine was more blue with a blend of white, new motor less then 100 miles on it, bought it not running right. Turns out you can't trust your buddy to put a good turbo on his newly rebuilt motor OMGh damn: Notice it started to smoke after a min or two of an Idell, pointed me right to the turbo, side to side was about 1/4 inch, changed the turbo, oil and antifreeze, started it up, and it looked as if my garage was on fire from all the smoke "looked like 10 quarts of oil in the exhaust". I let it runs for roughly 15 Min's at a time,3x Smoke is all gone! I got a cheap car with a built motor. :hellyeah: Me> :tease: WTF <My Buddy

So how long did it take for all the smoke to clear out of your exhaust?

well took a few start ups and revving it good a few times"Note: I'm not very nice to it, its been a pain in my ass". "If it were me", I'd go out on the interstate drive around 3k consistent for a few miles, drop gear" not redline it" and do some pulls, I would assume that the exhaust would be good and hot by then. If your sure that the turbo was the smoking problem, you could always be nice to your car and drive it normal and it'll work itself out.

also, my car had more oil then water/antifreeze"not your case",oil is gonna take a while longer to burn out. your car really shouldnt still be smoking "after a few drives", any white smoke if your turbo was the problem. so i would say not to be beating on it. drive it normal and see if it get better or wrose. keep an eye on that coolant!

Do a compression test man. See if its your HG or not. Or listen to these guys that haven't been here that long and are already set in their ways on what and how to do things. I know what TDC means. Compression test then a leak down test. Very simple. You should be around... well, you are stock pistons... I'm 168 on all four cylinders on wiseco 8.3:1... maybe this will give you a place to start w/ the OEM pistons.

You also said that after tightening the turbo or line, that the smoke stopped until giving it more boost. I'd remove the t-25 and check for shaft play as well as noticible damage to the housing or fins... imo, sounds like you have a blown t-25. I'll read more

A video would really help and explain how and where and why you are smoking...

I have done a compression test, and i have changed the T-25 which made a very noticable difference in the smoke. Did you read the whole thread? :hmm:

Alright guys. This morning I got the car running good minimal smoke. Even drove around town.. Then noticed a bad gasket on my oil return.. So I took it off replaced the gasket and found out the thread is stripped on my oil pan. My luck is shit =/ Im towing the car tomrrow.

Well everyone Im happy To mark this thread as resolved. Towed the car for them to re thread my oil pan, same day I picked the car up. Started it and am happy to say, NO SMOKE. My DSM is finally running again, turns out it was the turbo. Thank you everyone for your help!
