smoke from exhaust

car starts shooting heavy smoke from exhaust as soon as the turbo begins to spool its enough to blind people behind me oil is needing added so i assume its eating oil what would you say is wrong this is another stock turbo that was just put on with no shaft play

Sounds like shaft seals on the turbo. Having no shaft play doesn't necessarily mean that the seals are good.

what color is the smoke? is it blueish for oil or white for coolant? he is also correct that seals can be bad and still have no shaft play.

I'm going to shot for seals also. When you start boosting, you oil pressure will rise, so it may be pushing more oil through the seals at that moment.
And the fact you need to add oil often is a huge sign you are losing it somewhere.

Just to make sure, what color is it? (still positive its oil though)

My stock boost guage first line I think is when turbo spools and Thats hen it seems oil goes into my exhaust even more and blinds other motorists what is wrong

You asked this question not too long ago and i responded with what color is the smoke. you didnt answer or give any more details.... what makes you think oil is going into your exhaust? you should probably have a mechanic or someone with alot of dsm experience check your car out...do you have anymore details?

It is blue and I am losing oil I am not driving the car but when I did it used quite a bit oil but it does not smell burned and no coolent is mixed I just assume it's the turbo considering it only spools 8 pounds and
seems to really smoke as soon as it starts to spool but I don't undersand the smoke in my valve cover my pcv valve has great suction i'm just trying to figure it out before I dump too much cash into it my turbo is almost off Im
finishing taking it off tomorrow just needed to pick up a wrench to fit the coolent line

That's what I'm thinking but there's not really any oil in the intercooler but my accual air intake piping and filter before the turbo has oil but my turbo doesn't seem to havr much and the turbo doesn't smoke while looking at it, could it just
be going strait into the exhaust of the car from the turbo and not anywhere in my piping?

It could be your turbo. But if its in the turbo, it could be coming out the valve cover and into the pipe.

my brothers honda blows black smoke when he gets on it but its from him burning oil because his piston rings are shot... not sure that would be the problem here. as all the other guys are saying possibly turbo, but might give you a different idea.

If theres no oil in the intercooler than maybe you blew your turbo seals. Which would mean you need a turbo.

I was thinking it's got to be the turbo seals since there's no oil really anywhere else and only seemed to happen when the turbo would spool idk is there a way to tell r do I just buy a turbo and hope that it

Sounds like you blew your seals and your blowing oil directly into your exhaust/O2 housing. easiest way to determine is pull your O2 housing and see if you have raw oil in there. if so, you have bad seals. I suppose it could be a bad valve seal or valve guide too. That will put oil into your exhaust too.

I would try pulling your exhaust mani first and check to make sure you dont have wet exhaust ports. then move to the 02 housing. if your 02 housing is clean (which is unlikely) then I really have no idea where to point you. But starting at the mani will tell you where the oil is coming from. if nothing in the mani but oil in the O2 then it has to come from the turbo by default.

You won't normally find oil in the intercooler. What's happening is the oil is passing into the exhaust system where it's being burnt having never reached the engine. Won't show up on plug readings, won't be found in the intake piping.

There's really no way oil can easily pass through the seal on the compressor side due to the amount of oil on that side of the turbo being severely limited by the thrust plate. The oil on the compressor side is actually pushed away from the seal by the oil slinger. Not that it can't leak on the compressor side- but if it does, it's usually the fault of something else like an oil drain blockage.


Sounds like it's time to rebuild or replace your turbo before it fails completely.

You can easily get oil in your intercooler if you do not have a Catch Can setup. But if you have white smoke, its coolant (head gasket fail most likely), and blue smoke on boost is definitely OIL. Its most likely your shaft seals on your turbo (get a rebuild kit online), hopefully you have journal bearing. And you can check by grabbing the compressor wheel and feeling for shaft play. If you dont have shaft play, its your valve seals in the head.

Is there a puddle of oil under your car when it sits? Can you see any wet looking spots under the hood that looks like oil?

No it's not dripping any it's deffinitly the oil that I lose that's making te smoke in the exhaust I tore the turbo off and there's oil in the cool air side not too much but a little and the hot exhaust side has some black like dusty residue but no wet oil so idk how to know if that's the problem and the turbo doesn't seem to have shaft play
