First off, I finally got my eclipse that i've been waiting for for about 4 months, a 95 gsx, bone stock.

Quick question, if my friend is getting a new turbo for his 1g (looking for a big 16g), would it be worth it to get his turbo (14b) and bolt it on instead of my t25? or would that be too much trouble for too little gain. . .I assume i would need a boost controller or some more space, but don't have much money (until i pay the car off) to do a bigger turbo. Any help is appreciated

You would want a fuel pump, 190 would do, 255 if you plan on upgraded later, you will so get the 255. Might need a fuel pressure regulator for the 255. You will need a stainless steel oil line from rre or equivalent. A j-pipe I think, or some intercooler piping. That should do it. Boost controller isn't needed but would pull a lot of the gains out of the turbo.

to put the 14b on your going to need a 1g j-pipe, oil feed/return lines, water feed/return lines, then should be good! (maybe idk), you will notice a bigger performence increase. If your getting it the turbo for free I would say go ahead and do it. I'm not to sure what type of fuel you'll need, i guess it depends to what your going to boost it to. :dsm:

Do it. You will not regret it. The 14b is a huge gain over the T25. You will need an oil feed line, either an aftermarket SS one from the filter housing or a 1G line from the head. I would do the filter housing since you can reuse it on any turbo that has a Mitsu center (14b, 16g, 20g). Your stock drain line will work, just get a 1G gasket and match the holes with a dremel. Your stock water lines will work, just play with them till they look like they fit. You'll need a J pipe of some sort, either a full one from a vendor or just a stock 1G outlet pipe. If you plan on going to anything bigger than a 16G later just use the stock 1G pipe. It's a lot cheaper and who wants to spend 60 bucks on a J pipe for a turbo they probably paid 50 for? Flip your lower IC hose around and it will snake up to the pipe. Make sure you clamp it down tight and all should be set.

I should mention that it would be wise to port your manifold, the turbo, especially the wastegate passage, and your O2 housing. If you are still on stock exhaust you probably won't have to worry about creep but when you upgrade you'll be thankful you ported the stuff first. That's about it really, pretty straight forward swap. Have fun and good luck. :thumb:

Are you a careful person? If you are - skip the coolant lines on the turbo- either run a turbo timer or always cool down the car- but the coolant lines are a PITA that don't need to be there. The coolant is circulated to help prevent coking after shut off, they really don't do much during normal operation- especially when you aren't WOT for many minutes at a time- those of us that just drive and sometimes have fun, really don't have the NEED for water lines- so cap 'em.

That helps with the install- stock oil feed from a first gen, stock oil return from your car, and there is little else needed.

I know that Starr (98 GS-T) did this swap, T25@17psi netted 96 traps- 14B@10psi netted 96.X traps. When you can drop boost 7psi and make equal power- there is nothing SMALL about that upgrade!

Plus being a 2nd gen you've already got the better exhaust manifold- port it while it's off.

Yes, it is definatily worth the effort to swap them out. I just took my T25 off last month and installed a 14B. I love it. For the first time, I have power to redline. Especially since the turbo was free. I only really had to pay for the J-pipe. It is a huge difference in power between the two. Plus you can get about $100 for your T25. I say go for it. :thumb:

local guy has a gst spyder with an afc, 3" turbo back exhaust and 14b. on the highway, he's faster than 12sec awd dsms, evo's, sti's, etc
it's not a small upgrade, the 14b is quite underrated

If you can get it for a cheap price than i would go with it. But you can pick up a used big 16g for $300, but you will need supporting mods with it. I would get a fuel setup (pump, FPR, 550 injectors), also you can pick up a supra sidemount if you dont want a fmic setup yet, and a s-afc. But I would recommend that you save money and go bigger than a 14b. A 14b is a great upgrade from your t-25 but you will spend the money and want faster. I started out with a stock 1g w/ 14b turbo setup. The 14b became not enough for me, so i saved and got a b16g, and pieced together all the supporting mods and it became a wicked little setup I had. But now im in the upgrade process again, and im changing to a whole new intercooler setup, pte 50 trim turbo , 650 injectors, evo 3 manifold/02 housing, hks 264/272 cams, and alky injection. Now that is alot of money i have spent on upgrading. But i am a patient person and have put this upgrade project together in the past year. I like having the full potential of a setup and install everything at once, rather than upgrade piece by piece and slowly up the boost. So if you can be patient, I would save up for the 16g setup you will get alot better results out of a 16g setup and will be happier.

That kinda depends though- I can understand if the parts in question were harder to swap - say the difference between a T3 and the TD05- but on a 2nd gen you can nearly bolt a 14B on with less than $50 in parts- most of them someone has lying around for free. You don't have to upgrade IC, or injectors or fuel pump, or MAF, or ecu or anything. You need oil feed, and the J-pipe. That's really all you need to swap it over - you can get the little crap easily- and you're just sitting heads and tails above what you were.

You started out with a 14B- unless you've experienced the T2small feeling, you don't know how badly they need that upgrade.

The swap from a 14B to a BIG16G is minimal too- you can bolt in the 14B, then upgrade to the BIG16G supporting mods- before finally getting the BIG16G. I can understand NOT doing the upgrade to 14B if you KNOW you're going to want more. But 105+ traps with 2nd gen looks can be plenty for some :)

Sounds good. . .my friend (with the 14b) is getting that 16g by christmas, so i'm sure i can grab it for free. . .all i really need now is new coolant lines (the oil line was already replaced by a steel braided one when i bought it (leaking)) so the coolant lines, j-pipe, turbo (itself), and i think my friends dad is making me an alumnium heat shield for the turbo. sounds good?

Sounds great :thumb: Like they've said above, it's definitely not a small upgrade.

Not trying to steal the thread.. but I want to upgrade of course, and hate the fact that the install kits are ~$200. Other than a j-pipe, oil and water feed lines, is there anything else that I NEED? (keep in mind my car has about 120k on it, so I wouldn't be surprised if I'd need new gaskets) TIA

The 14b bolts on the 2g like the 16g, meaning things will be needed to make it fit, I know I said 'bolt on' as if nothing was needed...mybad. VFAQ has a good write up on how to install a 16g in a 2g using an install kit or used 1g parts. i'm sure it would apply the same for the 14b.

I know all about the 2g install :p I'm just asking if I can get away with the install with only the J-pipe and the two feed lines.. not the gaskets/bolts.

You will need a J-pipe and get the stainless oil feed line. Reuse both water lines and use either the stock 1G or 2G oil return line. (the 2G return line will have to be modified) It is up to you to determine if the bolts and gaskets are reusable. If they are in good shape, they can be reused. :thumb:
