ok so i just got this car for 300 bucks. thought the tranny fluid was low, so i flushed it and put a new filter and filled it back up. Its a 95 Talon TSI with around 145k on the clock. when i did the trans flush with new filter, it ran fine for a day or two, then today it started slipping again. it will move its just really slow and once it shifted out of first it went fine (with od on) i took it out this morning and decided to get into it and see if it was the trans or what. i stomped it and it went and it seemed like it didnt want to shift right from 1st to 2nd, and then from 2nd to 3rd. reverse works great! i dont know. i was reading and could it possibly be the end clutches? or should i just save the money and go buy a tranny? i cant afford to have it rebuilt. we did that with my jetta and it cost about 1800 bucks. i can get a tranny from a junkyard around here for around 150 bucks. not sure if it would be any better.

the guy i baught it from changed the tranny filter and said it drove fine and then it started slipping. he also said something about magnets with the trans filter which he forgot to put back in.... could this possibly be the problem?

and where is my TCU located. could this be a problem?

any help would be great. you can call my cell if you want to give me advice

1. I don't suggest posting a phone number as blatantly as that. Prepare for telemarketers.

2. I know others might not suggest or condone this, but try half a bottle of Lucas Transmission Fix. It's usually $8-10 a bottle. It stopped the slight slipping problems I was having. It's been going strong for almost 22k miles since I put that in. Some say it's a "quick fix" but hey, if it's lasted 22k miles, I don't call it a quick fix.

ok thanks! ill go pick some up tomorrow. hopefully it fixes it just long enough for me to get back in forth to my job for a month or so and i can swap in a 5 speed. I HATE AUTOTRAGICS! LOL first one ive ever owned. but hey its a great car for the money. :D

i put all my sound system and stuff in today that i had lying around.

any suggestions on to what the problem could be? im thinking its my torque converter.

but yea if anyone has a 5 speed tranny sitting around for a 95 TSI not ESI let me know. id like to get everythingi need for a swap. pedals, tranny, flywheel... etc

ok so according to my cousin william. he drove it and he says "it doesnt feel like a slipping tranny, i had one in my monte carlo. it feels like its poping out of gear, because it catches than pops out like its not engaging correctly."

you guys think it could be a linkage problem or a TCU?

HELP!!!!!!!!!!! *PULLS HAIR OUT!:banghead:*

If it's popping out of gear, your problems were worse than mine. You may need to get that one rebuilt. Watch the classifieds on this site. Cheap used transmissions pop up often. They aren't built, but they'll get you through till you get money, especially with a stock car.

Do you have a check engine light on?

Was someone doing some launches maybe?:shhh: if its slipping while upshifting, its most likely worn clutches. if its going from drive to what seems neutral, it may be differential. I dont think, tcu failures are very common in 2g

no i havent been doing launches. i think its the cable needs to be adjusted. thats goign to be my first try today. then if that doesnt work im going to check the pan and see if there are metal shavings in there. anyone have a tranny they wanna get rid of

ohy another question will a ESI tranny work on a TSI?

No. An ESI tranny mates to a 420A motor, and a TSI tranny mates to a 4g63 motor. Someone correct me if I am worng.

Is it free revving while driving in 3rd? or is it not shifting through the gears? the former would lead me to think its the end clutches, the latter would be limp mode.

ok well i think i found the problem guys. i called ipt a few minutes ago. i pulled the trans pan and checked the filter, wasnt clogged. it looked brand new. the fluid ehh it looked a little worn, but still had more of a redish tint to it rather than a brownish. kinda purplish. no shavings or anything like that.

the guy at ipt says hes putting his money on a TC . he said its very rare for a TCU to go bad and that if it was my end clutches id lose overdrive. so i ordered the torque converter and 500 bucks later well find out if thats the actual problem or not. ill keep you guys updated.

thanks for the help oh but for future reference. IF ANYONE GETS A 5 SPEED TRANNY FOR THE TSI AND WANTS TO SELL IT..... CALL ME!!!

no more autotragics here for the reason that im going threw right now. i like 5 speeds because usually if it slips or pops out of gear is just a sync problem or clutch.

The problem is you "think" and don't "know" I wish i had $500 bucks just to throw around and "guess" thats the problem:hmm: Best of luck:D
If your torque converter was completely shot, the car wouldnt even move or barely.
You have never fully described your problem. Does it slip when upshifting- than its most likely worn clutches. Does it feel like its going from drive to neutral to drive,etc- than that may be your differential or linkage, etc. I though you were checking the linkage, How did that go?

ok so here is what is happening.......

reverse works good. sometimes my forward gears work and sometimes it will feel like it will catch then BAM pop out of gear. kinda feel like it goes into neutral but if you rev it up to about 4k rpms it will slowly move forward then it will catch second and be a hard shift and go and then bam does the same thing. kinda like its the linkage problem. i checked it all out today and it seemed fine to me. but then again im new to automatics. if it does decide to run good and catch threw out all the gears, when it shifts from each gear it feels like it free revs. i take my foot of the gas and shift it manually and it will catch. i honeslty dont know what the hell is going on here!

i checked the tranny filter and fluid and the fluid like i said wasnt really all that bad, and i didnt have any real shavings in there. filter was clean.

The guy from ipt said that he could almost promise it was my TC. i canceled the order for the one from them and just got one from advance instead. i tore the tranny out tonight. and i have to work tomorrow but ill get around to it on thursday and see if the tc is actually the problem. if not then ill let you guys know whats up. AGAIN IF ANYONE HAS A TRANNY FOR THIS CAR PLEASE SEND ME A MESSAGE! i want a whole swap from auto to 5 speed. not to worried about an ECU at this point. i can get one off my friend in springfield who has a 5 speed talon sitting there for parts. it was a TSI but he already sold the tranny and the pedals, but has the ECU

It sounds like the clutch packs are done...when the old fluid got changed and the new fluid went in, that was it for the clutches. The old fluid I'm sure was the only thing holding it together. I'd say it just needs to be rebuilt.

ok so could someone give me a list of things to check!? LOL 20 different things being said that are wrong with it here. LOL does anyone think it could possibly be the tranny its self?

and that means the tranny is trash and it needs to be rebuilt? or can i just buy the new clutches and slap them in my self

i used mechanic in a bottle <3 <3<3 it fixed most of the slip problem. i adjusted the shift cable and now its shifting better than it ever has. still a bit hesitant when its cold. but it works good enough to get me to work. i called IPT and im actually going to try and send this tranny out to them next month to have it rebuilt and overhauled so ill have a performance tranny.

oh quick question. i checked part numbers off of an ESI and a TSI torque converter. they both matched. a ESI tc will work on a TSI right?

slipped either way, slips with od on as well. i just got 650 bucks for some landscaping i did for a woman and thats going in the bank. i get my tax return in a couple of weeks and thats going to be about 1500-1900 so all the money i get, im putting back into this car and getting this car ready to go for the road. im thinking of a performance tranny :D and possibly a turbo upgrade

I don't know about that, are you saying a tc from a 420A will slide right on a tranny from a 4g63?
