ok so i just got this car for 300 bucks. thought the tranny fluid was low, so i flushed it and put a new filter and filled it back up. Its a 95 Talon TSI with around 145k on the clock. when i did the trans flush with new filter, it ran fine for a day or two, then today it started slipping again. it will move its just really slow and once it shifted out of first it went fine (with od on) i took it out this morning and decided to get into it and see if it was the trans or what. i stomped it and it went and it seemed like it didnt want to shift right from 1st to 2nd, and then from 2nd to 3rd. reverse works great! i dont know. i was reading and could it possibly be the end clutches? or should i just save the money and go buy a tranny? i cant afford to have it rebuilt. we did that with my jetta and it cost about 1800 bucks. i can get a tranny from a junkyard around here for around 150 bucks. not sure if it would be any better.

the guy i baught it from changed the tranny filter and said it drove fine and then it started slipping. he also said something about magnets with the trans filter which he forgot to put back in.... could this possibly be the problem?

and where is my TCU located. could this be a problem?

any help would be great. you can call my cell if you want to give me advice

It could possibly be the torque converter but I would have to say that it is probably worth starting with end clutches. They are about $90 and take half an hour to change (you don't need to drop the tranny). If you have 150k on the clock they should probably be changed anyways because the original end clutched in DSMs are weak, IPT has better end clutches which should last longer and grip better. You can check VFAQ Site - Visual Frequently Answered Questions for information on all manner of repair procedures for your DSM including replacing end clutches.

I have had to change end clutches in my car twice. The first time I ran into issues where the car wouldn't move at all sometimes and would drive just fine at other times as long as I was very careful not to put pressure on it. The second time everything was fine except that I completely lost OD but this was actually due to a cut piston seal and not actual end clutch damage.

ok so im back to square one.... slips in everygear now. even reverse. so you think the end clutches could be bad? i thought those were only for overdrive? either way, im gonna probably end up selling the car unless i can find a transmission for it under 800 bucks. IF ANYONE HAS A 2WD AUTOMATIC TRANNY THEY WANT TO SELL THAT WORKS AND DOESNT REQUIRE A REBUILD. please let me know! ill pay cash and come to pick it up.

on 2nd note. if it is my end clutches..... what would the car be doing? and where can i order them?

Dan

If it is your end clutches, you will have no 4th gear, or O/D. You can order the kit from IPT, along with alot of other things for our transmissions.

Do you ever throw the car into drive while the motor is revved up or launch after holding the brake and the gas?

End clutches can slip in every gear, there is a clutch and plate for each gear. Problems with overdrive are symptomatic of end clutch issues because there is a greater force against the O/D clutch.

I would suggest new end clutches because in my personal experience there just aren't that many parts in an auto tranny that slip.

One thing you can do is pull the current end clutches out and inspect them. When you do there should be significant clutch material left on each ring which can be gauged by the diagonal slashes around the discs and when placed on a flat surface they should be perfectly true without any distortion. If you pull them out and there are no bare spots and all of the clutch material appears to be evenly worn then you may have to look elsewhere but if I were betting the end clutches are where I would put my money.

ok thank you! sounds good, ill check that first thing in the morning *keeping fingers crossed* i seriously hope thats the only problem with the tranny. either way, the body on this car is in great shape with no major dents, and the motor runs like a champ. so if worse came to worse, i spent 400 in all to buy the car, and an extra 200 bucks in mis. bs for it so far, im pretty sure i could sell it for 1200 to some gear head that loves these cars. either way, ill come out a head.

negative on the end clutches...... replaced them anyway while i had them out, figured i tore into it i might as well put new ones in.

my grandfather has been looking at it. he says the trans its self doesnt seem to be bad. all the gears are there. he thinks the pumps arent working right because it doesnt really catch gear till it revs up to around 2500 then it catches slow then BAM! it goes into gear.

so im going to order the new sillinoids for it tomorrow. slowly im eliminating the list of whats not the problem. so its only a few things left to figure out. its either the sillinoids are bad, the TC is bad (highly doubtful at this point) or something that causes the transmission to engage gears is bad. any suggestions?

anyone ever rebuilt one of these trannys? and if so where can i find a rebuild kit besides the ones IPT sells. i cant afford 500 bucks right now. only ones ive found or for the non turbo.

also another question, i found an awd transmission for a turbo today for 300 bucks, car had 34k on it when the guy wrecked it. anyway to make and awd tranny work for a fwd? i dont want to convert to awd.... although that would be sweet

and i agree a 5 speed swap would be the best thing to do, but for right now im just worried about getting this thing back on the road before i lose my job.

if anyone can help, shoot me a message and i can give you my cell number and we can talk.

It sounds like it could be either the shift solenoids are going bad, or as you said it could be the transmission pump going bad. I had the same problem recently the guy at the shop said I had no pump pressure at idle he had to rev it to 2000 rpm's so the machine could flush and fill properly. my tranny had the same symptoms. Anyways on the 5 speed subject. check your pm's

how about my valve body??? could that be going bad? and does anyone know how to check to see what kind of pressure my pump is getting?

mac....

that upgrade sounds sweet. im just not sure if thats what my problem is right now. i have no reverse now either, and i have to rev it to 2300 rpms to get it to engage and then when it does engage its a hard catch and the car jerks back. same with in the forward gears. but like once you get the car moving and out of first it goes pretty well but it doesnt like to shift the way its suppose to its like it will go into neutral before shifting, you have to sorta let your foot of the gas and then it shifts
