Hey guys, want to run something by you. thanks in advance.

I know, and I have searched here, that timing marks should be lined up perfectly left sproket at 3 o'clock and right at 9 o'clock.

We have a problem, that may be involve the timing. The mechanic checked the timing job and the timing marks align perfect (both camshaft sprockets and crankshaft sprocket) . Now he's telling me that yes they are good, but that they may need to go flipped. Like timing marks on the outside instead of inside.

So he wants to try re timing with the marks flipped. It sounds kinda weird to me since everything I find says they should be left sprocket at 3 o'clock and right at 9 o'clock. Don't see anything says that sometimes they should go flipped. What do you guys think? Do they ever go flipped?

(In case you want to know, the problem is this, simplified: car doesn't turn or stay on unless we press the gas, after t-belt job. ) But really, I'm just asking about timing, could it be that the marks may need to go flipped?

Thanks guys!

I like to give the benefit of the doubt, but your mechanic is a dolt :ohdamn:

Yeah, they may need to be flipped, IF HE PUT THEM ON BACKWARDS!!

Look on the front of the gears and see if you can read 2.0 or 2.4 on them. If they say 2.4 then yes, they need to be flipped.

Here show him this;
2GNT.com - PROPER_TIMING_MARK_ALIGNMENT

and then show him this;
2GNT.com - Timing_Belt_Replacement

And then he may need to scroll down a bit on this link and read about the timing marks;
2GNT.com - A_Proper_Rebuild

....and remind him about the crank marks lining up also. If you're lucky, he hasn't bent any valves on you.

The reason I call him a dolt is because there is just SO much information out there that is easily attainable that I find it hard to believe that he can't simply Google it up (if he has to) and work from there. And then knowing its an interference engine and suggesting to just "flip the gears" doesn't sound like he knows what he is doing.

Now, one caveat, if these are aftermarket gears, he gets a pass. The marks could be wrong on some aftermarket gears.

Haha, thanks a lot for the info guys. That's what i was thinking because it just sounds so weird right? But since coming from a mechanic who i thought knew his stuff i needed to verify with you guys who i know you know your stuff. I do appreciate it. I'll ask him to explain his reasoning next time i see him to see if i didnt understand him correctly. Thanks again guys!
