Ok guys im workin on a 96 ESI with of coarse the 420A engine. apparently I didn't notice this issue last time I was working on it... If anyone is familiar with both the 420A and the 4g63 this will make more sense. I assumed the 420a had the same type of "notch" to locate piston TDC in it that the 4g63 does. On my ESI i seem to have two of these "notches" (it looks like they might have been broken off of the thing tho) they are approx 3/4 inch long and have a V type shape. Here is a pic, they are at 11 & 2 o clock, ive circled them.
Should it have two of these or does this thing need to be replaced?? And Is it possible to replace it w/o removing the crank??

And help is appreciated guys, thanks!

but not two "chunks" out of it right??

Anyone know the procedure for pulling this thing off?

do you see the 3 holes in the pully. you will need to get a bolt type puller. that is what its called you can pick one up at a automotive store. just DONT try to pry it off or you will break it or chip it. then you will be sol.

guys thanks for the info...I think the sprocket is shot anyway, so i've already ordered a new one for a whopping 20$ LOL. Removing and replacing it I think is going to be tough..I thought there was a clip in the middle but now it seems that is something to line it up with. Cool

dam just now caught it. your sproket is on backwards :nono:

are you kidding??? the back plate is on the block side, the plate is suppose to be out toward the plastic timing cover??

Yes. You have that pulley on backwards. The "plate" you mention also has the word "FRONT" stamped in it with a distinct arrow which will align with the one on the oil pump. Congratulations. You ####ed up. :D Since you have a new one coming to you, you can just drill whatever sized holes in that thing, tap them, and use those sized bolts with the Chrysler Harmonic Damper puller to remove it. If you don't screw up the original holes, you might be able to reuse it, but it's your call.

Also, word of advice, be careful pulling it off, that you don't lose the little keyway that holds that thing in place on the crank. It's a little piece of metal that you can not leave out or lose. It keeps that sprocket in place for timing.

the keyway can come out?? Jeeze, chrysler engineering at its best huh. I will not be reusing it, not with the amount of material the plate is missing. Also, I purchased the car with it on there like that, I didn't put it on there but, I didn't check to make sure of how its suppose to be positioned. The 4g63 motor has it placed with the plate to the block so I thought nothing of it. Thanks for the info i appreciate it!!

Sounds like the culprit was the previous owner. I bet he took it to the dealership or something. :p No problem with the help. Good luck with it.

Yea, the previous owner was a retard. im not sure who or when the timing belt was changed but I now assume this is the reason it snapped, and bent all intake valves.

Do you think, running it like this (for how long I dont know) could have caused any internal engine damage? (with exception of the belt snapping and taking out valves).

Thanks for all your help guys, I doubt I ever would have caught that being on backwards. Tuesday I will be working on it and hopefully get it all finished and running!

Aside from eight bent valves? I'd be willing to bet you've got some nice marks in the faces of your pistons from all that batting practice that went on in there. If you're going to pull the head off and rebuild it, why not pick up a set of new stock pistons and rings? Runs about $130 from the Parts Dinosaur here in Phoenix. I doubt it would take more than a couple days for them to get up to Washington. I know of a couple guys who have bought stock parts from this guy and he is very legit.

Just my two bits.

sorry my responce was late, their was actually very little damage to the pistons. I was able to clean it up with some sandpaper and a wire brush. :)

Reason for not messing with the bottom end: pistons are o-k. And the car is going to be my cheap ass daily driver. My TSI AWD is sucking every last penny out of my wallet right now, so N/T comes last :)
