Should I use a stock pressure plate with a act disc?

I'm getting ready to install a new clutch and was wondering how many people were running the stock pressure plate with act disc combo. I know that team rip says not to run the act pressure plate with the stock disc. My goal in my car is 350 hp at the most. I was looking into the act 2600 disc. If i did this combo what is the best step height to use on the flywheel?

TRE and Shep are the two major sellers and experts of DSM transmissions. If TRE says not to use the stock pressure plate, I wouldn't use the stock pressure plate.

Sorry, but I don't have any answers for your other questions, just the one posted as the thread title. I'm betting that ACT's website or a phone call to them would answer your step-height question, and they may even be able to tell you any negatives that could result from using the stock pressure plate.

That's all I've got...

no, tre is saying not to use the act pressure plate with the stock disc. My question was if it was a good idea to run the stock pressure plate with the act disc?

A- It probably won't match up
B- Using a stock pressure plate defeats the purpuse of upgrading your clutch.
C- Once you pass the amount of torque the pressure plate can handle, it defeats the purpose of the disc.
D- The pressure plate is what creates the clamping force. If you are looking to get 350hp (probably 300 tq), your stock pressure plate cannot create enough pressure to hold that amount of power.

Save your pennies and invest in the whole kit.

Oh yeah, my bad. I wanted to say what Vallary99 said, but I wasn't 100% it was right. It makes sense if you think about it though. No matter how great your friction surface is, if the pressure plate is weak it's going to slip anyway.

something about wearing down the synchros prematurely or something like that. I can't remember. I tried use the link to their site, but i think its broken.

I'm running a act2600 with my stock clutch disk have been for 7000miles it grips great and drives fine I launch in 2nd gear slipping the clutch until I'm moving good enough not to just smoke the shi* out of the tires I did not want to mess up a high $ disk so i reused the stocker (trying to tear up the trans so my wife will let me spend some money on a awd)
why would it cause the syncros. to go out?

It would cause the synchros to prematurely wear out due to not letting the disk go enough to be able to shift properly. It would try to grab thus keep the tranny in motion and causing a notchy shift. The way I see it.. they make a kit...you do the work to pull the tranny....SO DO IT RIGHT!!!!! :thumb: I wouldn't try to cut corners in that type of situation.

The reason why I don't recommend the factory disc with the ACT is that the ACT pressure plate is designed to work with their disc.

If one were to compare the ACT disc next to one from the dealership they'd notice that the marcel spring has more curl to it that the ACT. The further that the spongy marcel springs push the friction discs apart the more clutch threshold you will have, making the clutch start to engage right off the floor yet not fully engage until the top. Mitsubishi probably did this in an attempt to make the car easier to drive for those pansy ass drivers.

Now if you look at the ACT marcel spring you will see that is dimensionally thicker. This makes it stronger and less likely to have an issue with shearing the rivets out. But the main reason I prefer the ACT clutch disc is that the marcel spring has less curl. This is to better optimize the clutch action in conjunction with their burly spring plate, the thing the throw out bearing pushes against, which may have a modified fulcrum point which increases clamp load, reduces spring plate finger flex and the trade off of less actual movement to release the disc and that’s why many have clutch problems when they use the factory disc such as having a clutch that drags and leaves you on the last thread of the adjuster.
