So I've been reading a lot over the past couple of weeks but I'm still not sure if going with an external wastegate will be that beneficial for my setup... That being said I'm in the middle of completely tearing down and rebuilding my engine and tranny and while I'm at it I was gonna bolt on my new 18G I picked up from Aaron Litt from Mach V but my only concern now is that while it is out should I go ahead and run it externally or leave it internal? I plan on running this on my DD as soon as the engine is put back in and will probably run this turbo until I can get enough money to upgrade to a larger turbo... With all my mods I'm hoping to get as close to 450hp as possible before maxing out the turbo...Any advice or suggestions would be appreciated :thumb:

External setups will give you better boost control pending on location. Internal gates are also known to blow open if certain pressures are reached as well which the external is better at resisting.

Yes, you will get better boost control with an external setup. It might be worth it to just go external so you are sure you don't get any boost creep issues.

Ok so obviously there is a perk to going external ,like cutting down on boost creep, but which one is more effective because again the more I read everyone has a different opinion on them but there is no specific answer...The one off the exhaust manifold or off the O2 dump like these....

+1 For external only bad thing is visual smog if you have to worrie about that

I guess in CA you can't have aftermarket essentially? It's the same thing as an internal but it's external and it won't leak unless you have it dumped to atmosphere.

Well the optimum would be off of the collector on the manifold so you regulate all of the exhaust well before the turbo. I personally have the Punishment Racing MVS recirulated o2 housing and o2 placed wastegates work just as fine as you are still regulating all of the exhaust instead of just a single runner. The only downside is there will be less room up front and it may hit the radiator fan.

well I just got my slim fans so I have a little more room over stock... now I'm just trying to decide which one I'm gonna go with (thank god there are so many choices :banghead:) haha... but thanks for your help guys I guess all I gotta do now is get the money for it!

The only other thing to consider is that the manifold mounted one will require the manifold to be modified while the o2 mounted one will just require a new o2 housing. I have an o2 mounted external gate with no issues whatsoever just so ya know.;)

I was seriously thinking of going with the first one I posted in the pics and then a Tial 38mm to top it off....I think that would be ok for my set up....what you think?

and just weld the hole where that flapped arm goes through the housing? ...that's not as bad as I thought it'd be should only take me like ten minutes at most in the garage to cut it off and weld it closed

I have a 18g and it holds boost just fine, doesn't spike at all and holds boost perfectly. Then again I'm running 21psi, and to be better in the power range boost will have to be higher but I'm not there yet so I'm not worried about it.

Well I had planned on running anywhere between 14-18 psi so how much are you running with no problems?

I run 21psi with no problems, you won't be able to tell too much of a difference from a 16g running boost that low though(maybe a little more up top but not a whole lot). What are your current mods? I plan on pushing for 400hp on my 18g, but its gonna be a stretch. Def won't happen on pump I know that, and I have no E85 station near me so pump+meth is gonna be my plan of attack.

I read your post wrong I thought you said you weren't running 21psi... and as far as mods go I've got way too many to list! but here's a few:
MHI TD05H 18G built with a larger thrust bearing and Ported by Team Rip, GM-MAF and Translator, Short Route Front Mount Intercooler with all hard piping, HKS SSQV, 850CC FIC fuel injectors, Walbro 255Lph Fuel pump with re-wire, AFPR with gauge, Glowshift's Wideband with Bosch O2 sensor, Glowshift's Boost and Vacuum Gauge, Glowshift's Oil Pressure gauge, HKS 272s from Buschur, All new ACL Main Bearings, ARP Head Studs, 3G Lifters, All new SS Valves, Crower Beehive Springs and Retainers, Ported Intake and Exhaust Ports, Bored .02 over with 1G rods and Topline Forged Pistons and rings, ACT 2600 Pressure plate and 6puck...

It's a 20lb wastegate. The holesets hold the wastegate shut because they are much stronger than the MHIs. I haven't run any higher yet, but I will this weekend after DSMlink is finally finished being installed. Jus had a thread about building these and how it help hold IIRC 23-25lbs no problem.

I really wouldn't mess with it until you've tried running it at an efficient boost level and end up not getting it to hold steady. There is no point in wasting time and money if you don't even know if that will happen.. 18g's are also supposed to have a 14psi spring, atleast mine does.

Yeah he gave me an extra actuator for 14psi...

I'm now planning on going with a full speed density setup and am going to take it to Dave at Foreign Muscle to get it tuned... Still contemplating on going external I've been contacted by our local vendor on here from Punishment and am considering their MVS Recirculated setup with a Tial wastegate....
