Shifter notchy and stiff with shep tranny

Get used to it... thats how it is. His personal car the one he ran an 8.76 in is damn near impossible to shift, you literally have to yank on the shifter to get it into gear. Your notchiness should improve somewhat with time however.

I have heard just the opposite about TRE trannies. Why would a shep with dual sychros be notchy?

Make sure your clutch is disengaging all the way, and make sure you set the shifter via VFAQ

I just put a SHEP TRANNY in as well and it too is very notchy and stiff. I dont get any grinding and my clutch as perfect engagement but it definately takes extra force to get it into gear.

How many miles does it take to "break in" to the point where I can single finger shift like I could do with my stock tranny?

I am running BG synchomesh because its zero degrees here right now. I use BG2 in the summer.

Correct break in is considered to be 500-1000 miles. I dont think it will ever get to the single finger shift point. I've had mine in for about 8 months and it still isnt there. It does, however, get better with age. After several months, it's not that notchy anymore. (either that, or I'm getting too used to the notchyness)

Is your 3rd gear any worse than the others because that one seems a slight bit more notchy?

Not mine....its a pain to get in first or reverse but once the car is moving and I am rowing through gears its not bad. I have the heavy duty 1st gen 3/4 gears and the heavy duty ones have crappier sychros but they are new and seem just fine.

Basically we set the trannies up for the long haul. The one in my race car is setup very light and shifts easily but then again I dont drive it for 100k :) Clutch disengagement is a huge factor in this. Other than that just give it time.

Shep you told me to stay away from the GVr4 1st gear..

What about EVO I gearsets?

I dont think many of us expect to get 100K out of a race tranny. I for one just want a high RPM smooth shifting tranny. If got 30k hard miles out of it I would be very pleased.

Hell stock trannies are lasting 100K+ and they shift smooth.

Well, the rest of us want more than 2 years out of our trannys.....

Wrong. Once we bump up our horsepower, our stock tannnys are failing. Mine went at 65K. Stock trannys will last on stock cars. John rebuilds his trannys to last on modified DSMs. Notchy or not, mine feels great and it will probably out-last my motor. :thumb:

I think it may just take getting used to. I put on 500 miles over xmas and by the end of my excursion I had forgotten or just plainly not noticed the difference. Like I said it doesn't grind its just tight.

I have heard many many more nightmare stories about other built trannies. The majority of tuner reviews of Sheps is very good.
