setting up blow off valve

lets say im starting from scratch and i want to adjust my blow off valve... how do i do it? ive been tinkering with it for hours and still cant get it right... what symptoms mean too high?... what symptoms mean too low?... what noises am i looking for?... what nubers should i be reading on the gauge?... i also have a manual boost controller if that matters... its really starting to aggrivate me because i cant seem to get it right

Well, the first thing we need to know is which BOV you have.

its a punishment racing bov... its got words and arrows... clockwise for harder, counterclockwise for softer

You have to find you own sweet spot ny friend. If you go too soft it will release early and pretty much be one giant boost leak .

so if its too soft will i see boost even at light throttle or cruise? my problem is that i am seeing boost at light throttle and im seeing boost with cruise control set...

are you reading the boost off the stock boost guage or aftermarket guage. looking at your profile you have no boost guage to know how and when your boosting, the stock guage is inaccurrate

how so? what could be the problem? i had the intake elbow off today to clean the throttle body... i did disconnect the battery too... i had it all tuned in but when i took the elbow off i am pretty sure that i accidentally turned it... just to be more clear i am seeing boost pretty much all the time

its installed preperly and was functioning normally before i disconnected the battery... it reads normal when on the throttle hard and it will creep up to about 5 psi when i set the cruise... it used to stay around 15hg

cleaned it following procedures i found at school on ALLDATA... alldata gets all information from manufacturers

its hooked up directly to the intake...


look all i wanted to know is what would happen if its set to soft (what do i hear/ see)

and what happens when its too hard (what do i hear and see)

so that way i know for sure which way to turn it and how much

i shouldnt be able to hear it under light boost or vaccum

but it should let off all the boost at once when i let off the throttle after a hard pull

correct..otherwise boost leak if it opens while in a pull, and back pressure on the turbo if it doesn't open after a pull.

ok this was confusing but my bov is set at 12 i think. but its a 1g

1g's aren't adjustable. You can "crush" them though.

BOV has nothing to do with setting your boost. Vacuum will pull the BOV open so yes, you will and can hear it under vacuum. Positive pressure aka boost, will hold the valve shut so no, you shouldn't hear it under boost conditions.

The battery in no way will affect the boost gauge's readings so there is something missing here if you said you are getting a different reading after disconnecting the battery.

Building boost at low RPM isn't a "problem". It's just a symptom of having a small turbo with load on the engine which in turn, builds boost. You can build boost when using cruise control because it is the same as pressing the gas pedal in turn increasing engine load and building boost.

And when you had your intake elbow off cleaning the throttle body, what did you "accidentally twist"? I'm assuming it's the BOV adjuster but you don't actually say that it is.

Best way to describe a BOV that is adjusted too hard... When letting off the gas after a hard "pull". You will hear what appears to be a large pigeon trying to escape from your engine bay.

Steps to take:

1. Pull over and release said pigeon from your engine compartment.
2. If no pigeon is found, Turn the adjustment screw a 1/4 turn softer and take your car for another drive.
3. Rinse and repeat.

If you're blowing off in vacuum, the setting is too soft...or you have a Jetta with the teensy snail. (take that Dubbers)

If it doesn't release when the throttle plate closes you have issues.
