No I beleive you need the lower timing cover so that when you use a timing light you can see where the notch on the crank pully lines up corrisponding with the marks on the lower timing cover.

I see your in Lincoln, Ne. As well as me. PM me and I can stop by and help you. You are going to need that lower timing cover though.
