Sand blasting to port and exhaust mani?

So i was thinking the other day how those shops flow sand or whatever it is to get the rough edges out of the throttle bodys. Well my dads got a sand blaster and i remembered if you were taking the paint off of somthing that if you held it there too long it was tear into whatever it was that you were using it on. WELL, why can't i take my exhaust manifold or my intake or my throttle body and sand blast the hell out of the inside and it'll follow which way the air flows and take off any rough edges. If you wanted to try to polish it afterwards, try smaller sand?
Anyone had any experience with this or tried it or anything? Anyone have any objections?

Interesting concept... I know there is at least one company that pumps a dough-like material that's embedded with sand through manifolds and such. It gives it a mirror finish afterwards.

You are thinking of extrude honing and it's a silicon carbide abrasive material, not sand. It works very well. I recommend it.

Yep, that's exactly what I was thinking of. I've seen good results from it. I wonder if sand blasting would work similarly.

How much is this extrude honing? If sand did work would it be more cost effective?

it wont work.
you may do the smallest bit of cleaning up rough spots, but dont waste your time.

buy a long nose electric die grinder, and a carbine bit, and a day off of work.

The reason why it won't work is because the blast media isn't as hard as the cast iron and/or aluminum you're trying to port/polish.
If you had blast media that was say powdered silicon carbide, then maybe, but you'd need a shit ton of it, and it would be very, very expensive.

It is a great thought nevertheless.

I've read articles about Extrude Honing, and they were pretty impressive.

RRE can provide a service for your intake manifold on an exchange basis.

I'm not sure Extrude Honing will port/polish your Exhaust Manifold because it's cast iron,
all I know of is that it works really well with aluminum...

you cant polish a cast manifold. port it out and be happy. sand blasting doesnt have enuf structural mass to break down cast iron.

not necessarily, what if i got a good pound of it and used it in the sand blasting tool? i'll just recycle it back into a bucket from the bucket. Understand what i'm saying? How exspensive is it?

$375 for an Extrude Honed 1g intake. Pffff. Personaly, I would rather spend the $375 on a downpayment on a Magnus. Thats just my 2 pennys.
