Exhaust porting- On VFAQ I was reading about porting the exhaust system. On the turbo port and the manifold port they mention ,"That ring gasket is thrown away, and the step is ground away." So is that ring gasket just not replaced?

Cylinder head porting- Is there any good tutorials on head porting like VFAQ has on exhaust? I haven't found any yet.

It just seems like porting a head yourself is a little dangerous, unless of course you work at a machine shop or something down those lines.

If you don't have years of experience and flowbench testing(and screwing up several heads) you will make the head flow worse. You really need to know what your doing. Unless your making some serious hp its not even worth it imo. People run low 9 sec 1/4 mile with the stock unported 1g head. There is more than just hogging the ports out. Even if you ported the head good it wouldnt matter unless you got a good valve job. I would recomend a good valve job for better flow. It makes all the difference. Bottom line is you need a lot of expensive equipment to port a head, and years and years of experience. As for the ring you dont replace it, just use a turbo to manifold gasket.

I've got to be honest. I really respect all of your opinions. And although a few of you have recommended against it, I am going to try. Worst case scenario I ruin a few heads.

I just got certified to teach and I will be teaching high school auto shop in the spring. I'm in my early twenties and all I have is time to learn. Hopefully through more successes than failures, but I expect many failures. I guess this is why I ask so many questions. I'd rather beat the dead horse for a while than jump into a port job and do something I could have avoided if I had asked.

I have read many articles since I started this endeavor and I think I am going to Try to match the ports (just because it's good practice,) Polish both intake and exhaust, try to remove castings, round off the short side radius, and polish the combustion chamber.

I want experience in everything. If I screw it up then I will learn. Maybe by the time I am thirty I will be able to succeed in this. Also, I just want to add that one of my goals is to obtain a flow bench for my classroom. I have taught in classroom that have chassis dynos, so a flow bench isn't a far stretch. Hopefully I will learn something now and then be able to keep gaining knowledge once I have a flow bench.

Thanks everyone. If anyone has any more tips for the procedures I mentioned above, feel free. I am also trying to learn more about the "D" shaped exhaust ports to prevent the gases from returning. I've read about it, haven't seen any good pictures.

Thanks again
