safe launching rpm?

2G transmissions are pretty strong. I have had mine bouncing off of the rev limiter and launched, nothing broke yet, considering that I have a 1G with a stock 3 bolt rear diff. Just make sure between the runs give your clutch plate to cool down, for at least 20 min. So, about 5500 to 6000 would be safe.

Its the clutch letting out part that breaks stuff, not the launch RPM. I street and track launch at 4,000rpm without a problem.

When you to launch, feather the clutch out to fast, you break part, tranny, center diff. You let it out to slow and you smell clutch burning or a smoke cloud from clutch, You can launch at 7K or 75k+ if you have cams and springs. but most launch around 4-6k. Try searching for how to launch.

I wouldnt launch it much higher then 4k rpm without a little slippage of the clutch, 3500rpms is a good launch range. I know your AWD, but I launch miy FWD at 3500rpm and they chirp just enough to heat them a bit, and then its all grip, but you can launch higher. Yopu just need to find your happy launching rpm, by experimenting at all different levels.

i've been launching between 5-5.5k with my act2600 and stock tranny for about a year now and still haven't broke anything...I just never drop the clutch I guess...when you can smell burnt metal (clutch), you know you got a good launch. I once launch at 6.5k when I raced an Evo but I shifted so fast to 2nd that it seemed pointeless to have a short 1st.

I have a motor that likes to eat 2100's and I launch it at 6000. I learned a little trick from Jake Montgomery about pre-loading the rear by holding the e-brake and coming up a teeny bit on the clutch to take the slack out of the drivetrain and make the rear squat without the car moving forward. On a regular street launch, I can make the moonroof slider unlock and slide back 1/4 of it's full travel. It doesn't smoke the clutch and the car rockets out of the hole.

It's hella fun. I wish I had a 2600 so I could throw 30 psi at this thing, but oh well. Anyway, if you launch like that at the track, it's easier on the drivetrain although it can be tough on the clutch if you slip it for too long. Like any other launching technique, it takes a little practice.

Have fun,

Andy

When you smell the clutch, it means that you slipped it too slowly and started turning your street disc into kitty hair. I've pulled 1.6 60's on crappy street tires and never smelled it once. If you can smell it, you lost time on the line from excess friction.

An so thats what he does, Ill try that when I get an AWD...eventually.

I launch at 6k on a Clutchmasters Stange 4 - 6 puck. My best 60 foot is a 1.944 so far. I am still learning how to launch. At 6.5k I smoke all 4 tires on the launch, at 6k I spin them a tad but when you spin, you are not breaking anything.

Dustin,

I launch under vacuum since I don't use a stutterbox or two step. Jake mashes it as the lights are coming down to leave under boost, but in his thread he doesn't recommend this on a single disk clutch since it'll eat it alive. He has a twin disc setup and it handles the power fine.

Just a caveat!

I say between 4 and 5k is what i consider safe. And you definitely don't need to launch at 6k to get a 1.9 60 foot or a 1.7 for that matter ;)

Every car is different in what it'll tolerate and there's no universal answer. I've been on tracks that were so sticky that if you launched below 7000 you'd bog, even with the right ratio of throttle and slip. The street is a whole different story though.

I've been launching at 4000 and it feels much better than the old 5500 launches. Not nearly as violent but it jumps off the line nearly as fast, only because I'm making 6-7 psi instead of 10. Enough to shoot the moonroof cover back about a third of the way as well.

It always amuses me when the quality of launch is judged by how far the sunroof slides open or having your windshield wipers turn on.

Another thing to take into consideration is how well the track is hooking up. If it is hooking really well it will take more rpm to keep the car from bogging down on take off and if it is not real sticky then to much rpm you will blow the tires off. It takes a lot of practice and one day may be different from the next. A general rule of thumb with an AWD is anywhere from 4500 to 5500 again, depending on how the track is hooking. The e-brake trick works really well too. Stage up, hold the e-brake up, slightly let off the clutch, set your rpm, and get ready to hall some serious butt. Just remember to put the brake down. I also suggest upgrading to a 2600 pressure plate. The 2100 will not handle a lot of abuse. Hope this has helped.

Just something to note, but you are correct in that I do not have a timeslip to corrolate distance of sunroof vs 60' times:)

I usually launch off the 2-step at 5k, but the track was really sticky last weekend and I had to bump it up to 5500 so it wouldn't bog. I pull 1.7-1.8 60's everytime. Just like others have noted, every car is different. If it bogs up the rpm, if its spins like a mofo launch lower. :thumb:

On the stock FW I was launching at 4,750rpm and had a best 60 of 1.66.
With the ACT FW, I have cut a best of a 1.62 and 1.63 launching at 5,500rpm. That's off the 2-step and I do a very quick slip. ACT 2600 with both the ACT disc and also the stock DSM disc. Street rubber.

so wow, I wrote the thread when I was going to sleep and by the time I got back from classes today, 19 responses. Thanks a lot yall. Well to answer one of the first responses, I'm running with the FP Big28 right now. When I originally got the 2100 pressure plate I was in that "I'm not going to be doing much to the car" phase, but ya know how long that'll last, so of course now I'm wishing that I had gotten the 2600 :( But oh well...maybe i'll just practice on the 2100 until it decides to give out and then throw in the 2600. I've only gone to the track once and ran twice and both times I think I was just nervous or whatever that I screwed up the launches, so I really don't have any track experience launches to say how well I've done, but on the street I can nail it every time, I don't know what the difference is, but oh well. So thank you all very much again for the info- I'll be practicing inbetween 4000-5500 and see what I can do the best and to which the car responds to the most. Adios yall.
