i just recently got my 1990 eagle talon tsi awd, and i wanted to know what the stock turbo is for it first off? next the turbo on it says td05 and thats i believe a 16g turbo, the previous owner has a mbc on it set to max out at 14psi (as read on the upgraded boost gauge) is this a safe amount of boost to keep it at for everyday commuting, and for if per say some sorry fool wanted to race or drag me like a loud civic?

and if this is an exceptional boost level, can it be pushed any more?

THANKS,
-BHawk

also, when under full throttle, it feels like iam peaking out around 5,500 to 6,000 by that i mean it slightly bogs at high rpm performance what could it be? injectors? clutch slipping? (brand new stage II clutch and lightweight aluminum flywheel) not getting...something?

thanks

The factory turbo is a 14b. Both the 14b and 16g (small and big) use the tdo5 housing.

there really are several thing that could cause that, i'd check the easy stuff first. plugs wires filters etc

14 psi is pretty safe on a stock fuel system. Do you have a wideband A/F gauge?

The first thing you should be worrying about when getting your car is not upping the boost, but maintenence.

1. BLT (will probably fix your bogging issues).
2. Compression test.
3. Recirculate if venting
4. Change motor and trans oil, coolant.
5. Timing belt job.
6. Invest in a datalogger if you plan on ever doing any mods.

Stock turbo is set to ~10psi. 14psi is safe but don't go beyond this without a logger. Do you have a boost gauge?

Crank that boost. But first get a fuel system set up, like fuel pump, injectors, then get a SAFC, and crank that boost, your stock bottom end will hold it. They are good for lots of power.

I had the same problem with my old 1g and it was the spark plugs it was over gapped and bad wires

This is the dumbest advice I've ever heard somebody give a person who is obviously new to DSM's and trying to learn.

Yes... they are good for "lots of power". They also make lots of shrapnel when you just "crank that boost" without supporting mods or if your engine needs maintenance...and a way to monitor what your engine is doing.

Well honestly there has been worse advice, if you want to boost it do, cause then you blow it up and build it. :thumb:

While the "blow it up and build it" method might be fine for those who have more money than brains, for most DSM'ers, we'll try to keep things SAFE.

OP, do a boost leak test, upgrade your fuel system, do all the maintenance, and most importantly, research your car. VFAQ Site - Visual Frequently Answered Questions has a page with 1000 Already Answered Questions that might be useful in answering some of your more basic questions that you will no doubt have (what turbo do I have, how much does my car weigh, etc.) as well as starting some easy "free mods" that you can do and simple fixes for simple problems. Then, when you have a question, do a search on our forums to see if anyone else has asked it before. Chances are, they have.

Also, keep in mind that DSMTuners does not condone street racing or driving unsafely on public roads. Your best bet, if some loud Civic wants to race you, is to just let them drive away. Getting into an accident, breaking your car, injuring or killing someone, getting a ticket, having your car impounded, etc. is never going to be worth saying "Wow, look, I just beat a loud Civic." If you are stupid enough to think so, then we don't want to hear about it.

You need to figure out what mods are done to your car and as previously stated, all maintenance work.
And make sure to check and change your transfer case fluid!

See my avatar that's what happens when you don't check it enough. Especially if the owner told you it sat for 2 years (learned that the hard way).

I'am not sure why a moderator just quoted the DMV guidelines in an online forum concerning TUNING YOUR CAR? but i assure him/her, i will not hold accountable the website DSMtuners.com for any involvement with the law i have in the distant or not too distant future concerning how i whipped a civics ass, however, What i have in my car and such is:

-i run ONLY 92 octane fuel, and will continue till i die

-i just traded for this car on October 10th 2008

-i do not beat on it

-it has a crappy exhaust that the previous owner thought was awesome, ie 2.5" and 3" back to 2.5 etc... not very good exhaust is what it should be called

-the clutch is brand new (stage II clutch, and lightweight aluminum flywheel) i will fill the tranny again with the sychromesh fluid i have read so much about, i dont trust the previous owner with even filling the transmission with even water

-IC piping is obviously not stock its aluminum and rubber and screw clamps and such

-knn intake filter

not much else.. but if you would like to advise me in what my next purchases should be, i would appreciate that ten-fold, thanks

Because it's in the rules that we don't condone street racing here. The reasons should be pretty obvious unless you're dense or immature. Don't bring it up here, don't talk about it here, don't think about it here.

And because if you're picking on civics, we don't want to be affiliated with you.

"Stage II" clutch doesn't mean much here. This isn't Gran Turismo.

Don't fill with syncromesh unless it's a track only or weekend only car. You will also need fluid for your transfer case and rear differential. I'm unfamiliar with AWD trans so maybe someone else can suggest a brand/weight.

Your next purchase should be compression tester, air compressor, materials to make a BLTer, plugs, wires, timing belt and pullies and tensionor, waterpump.

Sounds like a start. I went to Advance and bought a repair manual (even though it's for 95-2001 eclipse's...... why not a 95-99????) In there is told me what weight oil to use in the transfer case, tranny, and rear diff. I changed them out with some oil that Advance Recomended. I haven't had any trouble. all i can say is.... if the oil hasn't been changed in awhile, do it outdoors. The old oil smells HORRIBLE. i spilt some on my concrete in my garage.... it smelled like dookie for weeks. and Definetly get an Wideband Air/fuel ratio gauge. That way once you get all your maintenence done you can turn up the boost and make sure you don't lean out. Another good thing to do is take a look at the tuning guides and upgrade paths on this website. They are in the Tech Section on the main bar of this site. Very Helpful info and it'll get you started in the right path. GL :thumb:

P.S. One more thing. When that civic tries to race you, pull over and hand him a flyer for your local drag strip or AutoX. More than likely he won't show, but if he does.... you can take him down TICKET FREE!! and safely! :dsm:

Also, i had an srt-4 try to run with me on a local road a few weeks back (I didn't race). I told him about my Dragstrip and he actually showed. After i beat him he turned out to had just gotten it out of the shop pushing 22psi. He was so mad i won he left. Just goes to show ya.

If you plug your thread title into the Search -since you didn't notice it coming up when you were making this thread, and no, I don't know why the hell we bother trying- you'll find a nice long thread about this topic. Hie thee there.
