2G Rubbing noise coming from timing belt area when turning right in motion.

Started when I turned right, out of a gas station. Sounds like its coming from the timing belt area. Topped off my power steering fluid and it didn't help. If I rev up a little bit in a turn(when I hear it obviously) it sounds like it rubs/revs up, noise wise, as well. New to the forum, just getting into the scene and don't know a lot about cars. Any help is appreciated, thanks.

If it sounds like somethings rubbing, that's probably what's happening! You may be able to look down the left side with a strong flashlight and find the spot -- as you can already see the clearances there aren't great.

The most likely cause of something rubbing on that left ('front' of the engine) end is a bad engine mount or two ... or three. This would be a standard thing to have a mechanic check out: He'll put it on a lift and get under there with a pry bar and see how much he can move the engine around.

It's not at all uncommon for mounts to tear the rubber completely apart when they get as old as our cars are now. The mounts are designed so the engine can't go far but rub on something? Absolutely. The parts are available and replacement isn't a huge deal.

I'd also suggest installing the missing top timing belt cover. Any part of your body or clothing gets caught in that you're talking an Emergency Room.

Thanks for the reply. Working on getting a cover for that belt. I'll get scheduled with a mechanic. I'm assuming I should refrain from driving until I can get it checked out?

I would drive it as little as possible. It's probably safe if driven gently but you don't know what's being damaged by the rubbing or what might happen next.

These are pretty old cars now and with rare exceptions we get them because one of the recent owners threw his (or her) hands up in the air, said "I just can't deal with this anymore." It usually takes a while to back all that stuff out, find the fixes that made things worse and do it right this time, and so on.

I've got one I bought for 'parts' that's gradually coming together. I drove it in a circle on the front lawn the other day for the first time, hand brake stopped it, didn't stall, didn't miss ...

And put that missing nut back on the engine mount stud.

Our harmonic balancers are know to separate as they get old & can rub on the frame rail & the lower timing belt cover. Would hurt to check the balancer condition but rub only on right turns is a little strange for a separating balancer, they usually rub regardless of making a turn. BTW do you have any of the timing belt covers installed? The covers are important & keep foreign material & objects from getting caught in the belt, which if this happens, can be catastrophic.

The intermediate cover isn't visible in any of the pictures.

Also it looks like the engine is about 3/8" toward the driver's side from correct position. The front engine mount is off center -- you can see that in the top two pictures Pretty definitely something wrong.
