Okay so my car has a really loud knock rod knock maybe, sounds like a roller coaster. As of today i finally got to drop the oil pan and there were gold/copper color shavings in it so searching around heard it was rod bearings. So im guessing i should replace the rod bearings. Question is how to get to them, what they look like, and after i replace them if the noise is gone am i good, and if the noise is still there, what would be the next step? So looking for advice and maybe pictures/diagrams of what im looking for and what to expect. Thanks.
These are just some pics to show what part im currently at as of today.

From the looks of the rod bolts it's been apart before. Swapping bearings won't fix a rod knock. You need to disassemble the entire engine, clean everything, and get a new crank, and at least one rod.

Yeah, you can't just replace the rod bearing(s). The crank is likely damaged and will need to be turned or replaced. The big end of the rod(s) is/are going to be damaged as well, and will need to be replaced. Basically, you're looking at an engine rebuild at this point.

Damn, and here I am thinking im getting close to fixing it. (still a noobie to cars). Dont have the knowledge or tools for a rebuild sadly haha, so guess ill try my luck with a local mechanic. Thanks for the responses guys. Appreciate it.

I just got quoted about $1600 to get the short block rebuilt and $2200 for the whole engine rebuilt. Is that a good price? That includes labor and all that. Id love to rebuild it myself but i dont have the tools and knowledge to do so, plus im really impatient at this point LOL been monthes without it and just want to be able to have a car again.

Don't put a used engine, not motor, in a car. To do it properly, send it to a machine shop. replace the rod hat had the spun bearing. If it spun bad enough the rod won't be usable. Just rebuild the engine the right way. Don't skip out on important stuff.

Yeah man i hear yah. I dont want to "half" fix it and for it to just mess up ina month or so, if ima spend money its gonna be worth it LOL. People telling me to just buy a new car pshh they dont know about the DSM life obviously

There is some solid info in this thread.

OP, I doubt you will want to go thu what is necessary to go from your 420A to a 4g63 in your car, it is not a plug and play deal. Plenty of info to be found on the forum about that.

Do your self a favor and figure what your budget is and that will figure out what you can do and whet you can pay to have some one do.

You can still find a lower mileage motor cheaper than that if you ask me. You just have to look. And your rebuild price will most likely change once they see what the motors condition is! Those motors are everywhere :)

Just wanted to add that it's going to be hard to find a used low mileage engine out of a wrecked car, since the newest 2G was made 15+ years ago.

Getting the engine rebuilt will probably take weeks to months depending on how busy they are and what needs to be replaced (ie ordered and shipped to the shop).
