I don't think putting a subtle tow hook on out cars would be considered rice, as we don't have any stock, and we all know how often DSM's break down.

I was just thinking this evening about how beat up my front plate is from being towed so many times.

To me the sheer notion of someone trying to categorize somebody else's dream car into whatever negatively viewed "category" just tells me they either have too much time on their hands, don't understand the significance of not wanting to be like the rest or simply put; having different tastes which aren't common to the general consensus. This is not to say you are not entitled to your own opinion, far from it, but don't bash others onto thinking the same way as you. Rarely will you see people with kitted cars ask you to follow in their footsteps or categorize you for having a stock look. The fact that I see people asking if their car passes a certain criteria to be viewed as "ok" by the public only shows me the fear that this categorizing has driven into people who could have been imaginative and done wonders with their cars (granted the work needs to be there and done right, but this is true for any types of modification: performance and looks).

To me rice is more the attitude (as mentioned above) that such modifications bring to the table. Sure, I know what the term stands for, but as debated many many times over, anything not stock is "technically" a race inspired cosmetic enhancement (lips/rims/debadging/decals of any sort/tow hook/rally armor mud flaps although they do stop pebbles from flinging around/tinted windows etc) because either they do nothing to enhance the performance, or can only do so at speeds that we'd never see anyway on daily driven cars.

I usually try to steer away from this type of debate simply because it always turns into an opinion based fight which can't be won on either side because, well, it's an opinion. Hence, in a way, a personal taste which isn't something you can switch off yourself or convince someone else to like without really killing his/her views of what a nice looking car should be. It's either you like it or you don't. Diversity is what makes us who we are As always though, only one thing, and one thing only matters when you build your car: do it the way that makes your glad you did it, makes you smile when you look at it /drive it and gives you that sense of accomplishment in the end (and specifically for DSMs, a way that doesn't bankrupt your financial situation ! ). If it brings you joy, you've done it right I for one have a keen eye for anything well done onto which care and attention were the sole tools used for both style and performance whether it's stock or not. Besides, I love the fact most go for an OEM look because it makes kits go down in price for me (supply/demand)

wow, i used to like body kits along time ago i bought one and installed it on my gsx. i even had decals on it, and a big wing and yes i own the movie fast and the furious but i started to notice that my dsm was all stock but an intake an a full body kit, and everyone always tried to race me. so i started to built my car performance wise and in the process i really started to dislike the body kit. i got a new oem bumper and side skirts kept my oem carbon fiber hood and got my oem hight rise turbo wing back and lowered my car and now im in the sleeper look but with my engine just waiting to be awakened. i usually cruise normal but when a riced out honda with loud as hell muffler romps at me ill let them have a piece of my stock dsm based on my looks

You also wont find a Fast DSM thats riced out, because those of us that own dsms are usually limited on funds (i know i am, i wish i had an evo) so we pour what cash we have into performance, not wings.

You could always move to japan and buy a van though if you like RICE

I wouldn't Own one, but I can actually respect the amount of dedication, fabrication, and innovation it took to turn an ordinary RV into someone's dream ride. In Japan they don't see it as RICE to them it's a car culture, much like the motorcycle gangs, and the drifters. Just because it's different, and a bit out there doesn't make it wrong. If it wasn't for outside thinking we would never have had cars like the Shelby Cobras, GT 40's, Mustangs, Corvettes. Remember the world was flat, man couldn't fly, and we would never walk on the moon.

(On a side note The van pictured above doesn't actually meet the definition of RICE, as it doesn't look exactly like it's going down a track anytime soon, more like it was inspired by Gundam, pokemon whatever. The Fact that it makes it down the road in one piece is Amazing)

No but I'm thinking it's the struts. Has original ones on it and the passenger front one is blown. Also has a huge amount of toe on that same tire so I'm thinking its a combo of those 2 things

My two cents in three points:
1) rice is a term for people who don't think for theirselves in my opinion.
2) there is tastefully done and not, ive seen hundreds of cars with body kits look super sexy and hundreds look horrible. Most of the time it comes down to how well it was done for me at least
3) lastly its your car BUT not everyone will like it AND don't take it personal if they don't. That also doesn't mean don't take advice or constructive critizism.

As a side I think the sleeper look is eh. Yea it's fun to pull up on vettes and vipers in a stock looking car and dust them off. But to me its way more fun to do the same in a car with a bodykit or one not looking oem and even more funny when it's a fellow dsmer that just called you a ricer haha. The only other thing I'd put on the table is make your car look like how you want but a cop will more likely pull you over if you "look" fast rather than a normal car. Like everything there are pros and cons

Someone put one of those on my car once....something about a large exhaust tip (Apex'i N1), too much stuff on the dash (Greddy Profec-E01 display), over use of stickers (Top Speed Chicago decal on quarter glass), blah blah blah ... completely ridiculous since everything I had on my old GSX, save for the Blitz bumper (yeah yeah, that was lame...) was performance related.

Never figured out who it was. Probably the resident V6 Mustang retard.

I always thought of ricers as those guys who first get their sport compact and they think it's fast, like the Honda guys typically. You know those guys, the ones constantly revving their engines, showing off with unnecessary burnouts, speeding through parking lots (putting people in danger) or just talking crap they probably can't back up (like how their d15 all stock Honda outran a Ferrari). Most of em probably let the fnf movies go to their head. As for visual mods, why do we have to be criticized for that stuff. All sorts of cars are modified for shows from the 40s to the 80s and they don't hear anything about it. As for the fnf movies, I think they may have been based off the mid night club (at least the first one anyway). It obviously has its differences from the actual club but it's all about racing high performance cars and they even have the Chinese bikers to resemble the bosozoku (sp) biker gang that originally disbanded the mid night club in I believe 1999. Either way nobody should let anybody's opinions determine how their car looks. I personally am a 2gb kinda guy but I still like body kits. As for the wings, on fwd they have no purpose except holding your car back and screwing your gas mileage. I learned this the hard way. There are some dumb mods people do to their cars but it's their car... not much of a point complaining about it. Just a waste of a breath imo. My .02

I like your definition of RICE... Interesting info and yes you are right about "its your car, do what you want to it" but their is a certain line that defines good mods and straight up I hate the ones that just change their intake and think its a performance car without any serious work done on the engine...smh
I like body kits but please why bother sticking a vent scoop on your hood or on the fenders when it doesnt do anything but collect dust, water and other crap which will eventually damage your paint and possibly rust. my $.50...

Rice is the stuff that looks the part, but isn't. Wings that don't work, body kits that do nothing for aero (or even the wrong things, like air intakes for the center of a dsm hood), stupid levels of camber, rubber bands for tires, fake blow-off valves, carbon fiber wrap, carbon fiber shit added on that does nothing but add weight (like the side "spats" on Evos, wtf is that nonsense?),"carbon fiber" parts that consist of one inconsequential layer of carbon fiber backed by fiberglass and covered in tons of layers of heavy gel coat ... the list goes on and on sadly.

I'm all for style when it's there for style, but when it's there imitating real performance parts but doing nothing but adding dead weight and sometimes even hurting performance, that's where I have issue.

I sort of feel that ricer isn't so much of a look, as much as it is an attitude.

I think that kids running around in a beater neon trying to race everyone is more of a ricer than a kid with a 1.8l eclipse with a body kit and lime green paint that just cruises it around.

I agree. I respect any car as long as its done right and the owner is a cool person and doesnt think he has the best car.
