Reverse is gone. 5th feels bad.

I just bought a built tranny from "Unreal". Its got a basic build up, double synchros, heavy duty 3/4 synchros and rail, steel forks, and a 4 spider center diff.

I got the tranny in and the linkage needed to be adjusted (badly). I accepted that and drove it home in the gears that would fully engage. 5th felt odd. It was ok to get into it, but getting out was tough. After it was pulled out of 5th, neutral felt very stiff.

I adjusted the linkage one night, but did not drive it. I only tested it while in my driveway to make sure all the gears engaged correctly. At this point I still had reverse and now it went in just fine. 5th still felt strange.

The next day I went out to leave for work and Reverse was not there. The shifter will not engage reverse. It is locked out. It feels like when you go from 5th to reverse and the tranny wont let you into the gear (safety lockout).

I pulled the cables off the tranny and tried to manually get it into reverse. No luck. Same feeling.

I have been searching but have found nothing to help me very much. Nothing more than a few theories. NABR had nothing to offer me, nor did the GVR4 board. No one seems to know.

What do you guys think it could be ?

Btw, this tranny was pulled at about 5k miles on the rebuild and worked perfectly beforehand.

Damn, does this really stump everyone ?

I pulled the rear cover tonight. Pulled the roll pin (and 36mm nuts) and the gear is stuck on there. The Mitsubishi rebuild manual says to "slide" the gears off. They dont slide off.

Do I need a gear puller for 5th gear ?

Can I pull the 5th and rev from an extra tranny and put them in there ?

Yes, this is a tough one.

5th gear can be tough to slide off. Once the nuts are removed there is just a slight press fit holding them on. The top gear rotates on it's own bearing, so once the hub and slider are removed the gear should spin freely on the shaft. It should come off with no resistance.

The lower gear can be tough. On my AWD I have to use two flat head screwdrivers to carefully pry the gear off.

Since you have the cover off try shifting between 5th and reverse and see what happens. Watch the movement of the shift rail. Take a good look at the hub slider, check for rounded off corners, grooves worn into the hub, or any sign of wear. Maybe something will show up.

I would also ask "Unreal" if he had the same trouble. Maybe he can offer some insight.

As for the "blocked" feeling. There is a mechanism built into the shift rails that won't let reverse engage unless all the other gears are in neutral. It's located in the shift rail next to the reverse gear shift lever. There's a chance that gizmo is binding. You'll have to dig deep into the tranny to examine it. That's a lot more work, so like I said earlier, try playing with the shift levers and see if it still binds. With this type of problem you'll just have to elimiate one possibility at a time until the problem is solved, or until you give up!

lucky u... u actually pryed the gear off? i had the same problem and replace the whole tranny.... and after i had the old tranny off i wanted to take it apart and maybe learn something... went to pry 5th off and BAM!!!!!! punched myself so hard in the head i feel backwards onto my A$$!!!!!

Shit, now the problem is worse. Neither 5th or rev work (I didnt change anything). The shift arm just free plays in either direction. It seems like something is disconnected now. It seem that the shift arm does not actuate anything for 5th or reverse. The fork doesnt even try to move, but I have full motion in the shift arm (for these gears).

Im not prepared to tear apart this tranny. The next time it comes off it will be repaced with a Shep tranny. Right now I need to find another car so that I have transportation.

He said it worked fine for him in the past.
