I got a 99 N/T with an N-1 catback, looking to get a high-flow cat and need some help. Is a resonator the same thing as a high-flow cat? Or is it illegal and will not pass emissions? Also, I need some recommendations on a good brand high-flow cat or resonator. Haven't seen much more than those $30 eBay ones and that's not happening. Has anyone done a high-flow cat on an N/T and noticed a difference in power and sound? Details please.

No, a resonator is a resonator, it's suppose to make your car more silent, but usually all it does is clean up the sound (gets rid of some of the raspiness). I know you're not looking for one, but since it was brought up, I just want to complete the thought:

There are different kinds of resonators, I forget the names but one is an open chamber and it works by slowly down the air and having the sound bounce around in a chamber, one's a deflection type where there are plates inside the chamber to deflect sound back on itself, and ones a glasspack, which is what most straight through mufflers are made of.

As for high flow cat's, i think all cats made for a 2g will fit. You'll want to find a 2.5 unless you're specifically building a 3 inch exhaust to prepare for a turbo kit or something.

our cars already have a resonator on them any way. and if you don't have a bunch of mods you are going to lose some power going with a high-flow cat plus it'll be raspy around 2-3k. I did on mine before i went turbo and didn't even want to drive it until i got a new exhaust. If i was to do it all over again, i wouldn't have cut the cat off or put a high-flow on. I would have just gotten a new straight through muffler or a cat-back.

I need a recommendation for a high flow cat for a 99 NT with an Apexi N1 cat-back. All I've seen online is OBX for about $60 and other brands I haven't heard of for hundreds more. Is there a difference? Has anyone used an OBX? It claims to increase horsepower by 10-15. Reasonably speaking, how much horsepower can I gain and what is the difference in sound?

Also found a Ractive Exhaust Resonator that replaces the stock cat. Is this legal? Any info on this is appreciated. Hook me up with some details peeps!

ROFL, sorry they said they get 10-15 hp, i just had to laugh. No way you are going to get that much hp. IMO brands dont really matter, (i dunno much about this cuz i live in south fl but if it snows where u live u might want to get something that wont rust easy) otherwise i would just get a hi-flow cat off ebay $50 shipped 2.5" diameter or something liek that.

The hi-flo cats you get off ebay are typically resonators/test pipes and not cats at all. This is true for the 1gs and 2gs. Buschur makes a decent high flow cat for $90. You don't want to get caught without one on your exhaust. Plus, you don't want a test pipe since you need a little bit of backpressure in the n/t engine whether it's a 4g63 or 420a. I bought one of the ones off ebay and found out the hardway. I installed it in my car, and I lost some low end power with it. It's just my .02, but I'd go get a high flow cat as opposed to one of those ebay things.

I would only go with 2 high-flow cats on the market: RandomTech and Magnaflow. I use RandomTech on the C5 and it gave me around 5-8 rwhp on the car.

Magnaflow is the one I bought for the GSX. It is CARB legal in 50 states and definitely legal on the GSX since it is a 5+ year old car. Supposedly they allow you to replace a cat in the event of a broken OEM one or for over 5 years on the car.

Here is the one I have for the Eclipse, waiting on a full SS downpipe.
Magnaflow Cat Mirror Finish

I thought of not adding a Cat to the DSM but Im here in Cali, and 5 HP lost to emissions isnt that bad - and legal.

Yea, but I wouldnt be able to remember what I paid if it wasnt for my wife. She has organized my "car file" here next to my pc. She saves all the receipts from my dsm expenses. Thats even how I knew who I got it from. Its been a while ago.

So something like this is just a resonator and won't pass emmissions?

It doesn't look like a cat. I checked out BuschurRacing.com but they don't show any pictures. Any other sites would be helpful.

No, it isn't a cat. All that is, is a resonator. It's just like the one I bought for my 1g only without the extra holes :). The Buschur high flow cat looks like a cat. Mach V motorsports sells the Buschur high flow cat, and there is a picture of it on their site. The address is http://www.machv.com/busrachigcat.html . They are only made in 2.5 inch and 3 inch. The bolt holes on the flanges are slotted, so they will fit up to a smaller exhaust without any problems. Right now, I have the stock catalytic convertor back on my car. I almost got caught with the test pipe on my car by the CHP, and it scared the hell out of me. On top of that, a test pipe didn't really help my powerband the way I wanted it to.

I need a 2.5" to bolt up to the N1. Will the Buschur bolt on no prob? The Buschur and Exile Racing cat look best. I don't want something universal like the Magnaflow and the Random Tech was $240. Thanks for the sites dudes.

This may be a stupid question but could u possibly use a gst cat??? I figure that it would flow better than ours and since u can use the catback part of a gst exhaust on a nt then y not the cat?

I'm not sure about that Bochur company but I know tthe following companies make cats for under $100 for our applications:
-OBX R
-Arospeed
-Bomz
Adding 10-15HP is more likely at the crank and not the wheels. Depending on your other supporting mods expect between 4-8 whp gain at most (maybe). It's a solid mod but dont believe everything you read from aftermarket companies unless they show you a real dyno map before and after. :thumb: :dsm: :talon: :laser:

Prisewise, the Exile Racing looks the best. For $50 more is Buschur, which is stainless steel. I've heard there is a terrible noise difference after installing a high flow cat. Is this just an initial thing that will go away or does it relate to what exhaust is installed? I love my exhaust sound now and don't want any degradation (if that's a word) in sound.
