I have heard people say that if you shave the crank the nitrate coating comes off. Now I need to to know if it is true and if not, does shaving make the crank weaker at all? Im shooting for about 600-650 but I have the parts to achieve it. But that is besides the point. All im asking is if Shaving the Crank causes a weakness in the bottom end.. Thanks in advance~CLIFF

Tuning the main and rod bearing surfaces on the crank does remove nitrated material. How much strength is lost depends on how much is being removed and how well the radius is cut in each corner.

It's also possible to retreat the surface hardening (nitrating) after cutting but costs.

Well, I just talked to an old Mitsu employee and the nitriding is just Harding. And when serivced it doesn't effect it any as long as it is no more than a 10/10 grind. How true that is I don't know but I talked to him on the phone while at work. I believe I am getting a eagle crank but.... I know of a lotta people that ask this question over and over. I believe it depends on the kind of power. Just like JAM billet main caps. Do you need them.? I have never seen someone with low number (on the street) use them. But still, I don't believe that shaving it will hurt the cranks ability to handle power. But depending on the power wanted I would be careful. I do believe Im going to eagle. I get a damn good deal there.

No, he told me that the harding process, or whatever people call it, is just a coating that is only 10 on the crank. Once it is shaved, SUPPOSEDLY it is just as strong. But then again I don't know. That is why I posted this forum. But it don't matter. Im getting an eagle because of the power I making. But he said all it is, is a harding process from the factory and it makes no differance because it ISNT done on the Journals because if it was it would Crack. The Crank give alittle. But that is everything that I was told. That is why I am posting.

He now works for a company that remans cranks and he reads and recieves updates on Mitsu's specs. All it talks about is the hardening process but isn't nessecary. Becaue I just called another place to double check and they said the same thing..... Im only posting to help out other people who hear shaving the crank makes it weaker.
