ok im about to pull the head on my car and i notice that there isn't any timing marks on the cams..so i was thinking that i could just make the marks where the cams line up and make sure that the crank doesn't move. Any other ideals. btw what size of alen wrench do i need to take the head bolts off

-The marks are on the cam sprockets, with the dowel pin on the cams point to 12:00, line up the > < on the sprocket at 3:00 & 9:00.

-10mm allen, if you don't have one of those allen in a socket, you can simply cut a 10mm allen wrench to about 2", then tape it into a 10mm socket, works the same.

Sorry to bring back such an old thread.

In post 4 the timing marks are circled. Why are there two? Which one do you line up? I have it lined up like pictured in post 5, but I'm having some issues.

Just incase the cam gears are put on the wrong camsand to make sure they are infact lined up by lining up all of them in a straight line. You need to make sure the dowel pins are pointing straight up when lining up the marks.

The two marks aren't 180* apart so you can't make a straight line through the 4 marks and the centerline of the bolts. One mark is for when the sprocket is used as a intake sprocket and the other mark is for when it's an exhaust sprocket. When used as an intake the dowel pin is at 0* (12 o'clock) but as an exhaust the dowel pin is at 3* 5'. Since the marks need to be at 180* and 90* installed. The exhaust mark is at 86* 55' measured from the dowel pin.

Degrees, Minutes, Seconds

When lining up the marks the reference points are the centerline of the bolts and the timing marks between the two bolts.
