So I pulled my head and removed the cams, and I saw on my exhaust side there are some lines that you can feel with your fingernail. They are not on the lobes themselves, but the other part (idr name). Is it safe to use the cam as it sits? The intake side has them also but not as pronounced. Thanks

They should be fine. As long as they aren't really bad or on the lobe anyways. If wrong someone please correct me, but i have some used cams that i put in my head and they are fine

If you mean journals then it is still a risk putting them in. Depends how bad they are. You can take it to a machine shop and have it micro polished.

That is correct. If the scratches are deep or have a raised surface you should smooth the journals out. It can be done with some wet/dry sandpaper and a lubricating/cleaning fluid. It is not complicated . Use a very fine 600+ paper and something like WD-40. Just turn the cam in your hand and feel what your are doing. Don't go crazy. Look at the bearings for any embedded particles that may heave caused the scratches. Tres....

Do I have to use 600 grit? What about 800/1000/2000 since that is what I have right now. Should I sand them until the lines are completely nonvisible, or to where the cam is smooth again? They are the parts that go under the bridge looking parts with the 2 12mm bolts holding them down.

I personally would not hand sand it. It can throw it out of round and easily damage the cam.

I will probably lightly sand it then with some 1000 grit. I will also do the oil port mods since the heads already apart.

There is a couple of oil drain holes in the head that have a thin layer of metal that looks like it was from the casting process. would it be beneficial to smooth those out also?

those glove look kinda deep and I wouldnt want to sand it. I would probably have a professional do it just to be safe.
