Hey, So i got the rebuild kit for the td05 for $55, but i just noticed one of the blades on my exhaust turbine has a small piece of the corner chipped off.. :ohdamn:

Options?

this thing keeps getting more and more expensive..

It looks great though.. i just got the timing done :D

Not at the moment, i will this afternoon, my house is full of sleeping people.. :shhh:

I was kinda thinking about upgrading too.. if i can find a cheaper used turbo and send the kit back.. unless anyone on here wants to get rid of their td05 they replaced ;)

how much do you think shipping would be?

oh and before we make it all final.

do you know what i would have to do to put the 20g compressor in the td05 housing?

just wondering if i can steer this problem in to a upgrade..

Well what cold side so you have. I doubt you could machine a 14b housing enought to fit the 20g wheel. You would have to start off with a 16g housing and the lathe it out to the 20g wheel specs..

its the stock turbo, but from what i've been reading (correct me if im wrong) it sounds like the 20g just drops in.

How big of a chip are we talking about here? I'd be tempted to run it.

Here's a TD05H turbine from a customer's 20G turbo which was boosting absolutely perfect when it was still on the car. This turbo was removed because it developed in/out play from a worn thrust bearing, completely unrelated to the turbine damage:

Examples like this make me question the importance of balance on the turbine side.

iirc you need a special machine to ballance and properly rebuild a turbo, correct me if I'm wrong.

But it can't provide enough energy to push a compressor like a 20g to it's full potential . . . If that is a concern here. Which I doubt. . . . Just throwing in my 2 cents Jus.

In the case of the turbine in my photos, absolutely. It still made 25psi somewhat easily but the owner never noticed any additional lag because the inducer tips didn't leave all at once. Once the turbine was replaced, however, he complimented the quicker spool.

In the case of the O.P., I don't think a small chip out of one blade will do much of anything to ruin turbine efficiency unless the turbo was being pushed to it's limit.

I do it myself using a flashlight and a drill press.

(Yes, you need a very expensive machine to balance turbocharger parts.)

Not really, Sam.

The biggest compressor wheel that will fit in a 14B housing is an 18G. I know because I have one like this....and yes, it required EXTENSIVE machining of both the compressor cover and the center housing.

You're better off keeping the 14B as-is unless you want to pay to have extensive machine work done. You can find deals on 16G's and 20G's that need rebuilt all the time....if you find a 20G for around $300 with no wheel damage that is in need of a rebuild, it's a good deal.

When I took my last 14b off the car, the turbine looked like the one in the pics, maybe worse. It held 20psi and spooled up just fine!

When I got my car the owner said you had to hit the exhaust manifold with a hammer every so often to get it to make boost. There was a piece of valve stuck in there and the turbine was shredded, ran for a few thousand miles like that. I'm getting ready to slip a new turbine in and run it!

Bringing back this thread from the dead but i have a quick question. I think i know the answer but here we go, currently looking at purchasing an 8 blade hx40 for 250 shipped. The seals look good and has no shaft play but the person selling it says it has a very small chip on the compressor side. What kind of issues will i have with this or is it even worth my time. Im not sure how big of a deal it will be but if it won't be a large deal ill probably continue on with the purchase. This will be getting pushed hard through a bep housing for the time being before i upgrade to full t3 or t4

If you can find a cheap replacement compressor, then don't even screw around...replace it. Check with diesel performance shops that do OEM turbo upgrades like htturbo.com; get the part number from the back of the compressor wheel before you call because they'd rather have part numbers than measurements.

Wouldn't that also require a te balance though and basically justify having a complete rebuild done? If your gonna go that far wouldn't you want to just completely finish it off and make it new again? Just trying to understand better.

Really..... Is the locknut the balanced component in that kind of system. Ill ask the seller for pictures and post them on here so that we can see how bad the damage is. If its just the tiniest of knicks i might still pick it up
