So i've seen a few pictures (like the one I'm putting on this thread) of them and it looks like a cleaner alternative to what I'm doing to keep mine in place, though im partial to the zip tie look :p

1) Is it necessary or does it help at all?
2) Would sheet steel work if I make it myself?
3) Is it worth the time or effort to make it myself?

I'm trying to get one done today if I can so quick responses would help. Thanks!

Made something like that for my truck to sheild the air filter from the turbo. I used 14 guage, cut it on the shear and bent it up in the brake. Took me 20 mins.

1. In 100*F weather, I've reduced intake temps from 120*F+ to around 105*F. In 50*F weather, I've seen it drop from 90*+ to about 60-70*.
2. That's what I made mine out of.
3. I think so.

How are you going to feed the engine air with the shield in place?

That's why god invented the 4" hole saw:D I run a 4" drier hose from the old sidemount intercooler bumper opening to the bottom of the frame. That pumps enough air to the filter. I still have the shield in a box somewhere but I prefered to take it off the car. Without a hole feeding the enclosure or a big gap around the heatshield, the engine is going to strain to breath, been there and done that.

I was going to make it a U or L shape to fit, and leave it so there's no bottom and the intake can get the same amount of air it was before just more from under the car and the side hole and less from the engine bay. I figure I do it and see how it works, I'm making it at no cost so it cant hurt to try it out.

Also, what the hell is that small air filter over the 2.0L text on the motor? Is it just for show or does it serve a legitimate enough purpose to pick one up?

It looks as though you already have a cold air intake. If the filter's far enough away from the header, I wouldn't worry about a heat shield.

The small filter is on the valve cover breather. It's job is to get all oily and spew oil vapor all over your pretty engine.

The timing belt top cover is also missing in that pic. It would be a good idea to put it back on.

ROFL put that timing cover back on, you don't want anything falling in there and ####ing up the timing. These are interference motors OMG

oh thanks, yeah thats not my car, just examples i found on here. I'm just trying to figure everything out, but thanks.

Agreed. A heat shield would have minimal effects if you already have a CAI. The temperature drops I quoted were for an intake in the stock location in a turbo motor.

+1 Instead of making a intake shield, make sure you install a bypass filter so that your engine won't suck up water.

well i've got a short ram intake, thats why i wanted to see if a heat shield would be beneficial. but thanks to everyone.

For a short ram, it would help. I mean making a heat shield is simple. All you need is thin aluminum, tin snips and a vice clamp to bent with.
