There was nothing wrong with my head or anything, but I decided to replace some gaskets and upgrade some things. I put on a new headgasket, new valve seals, lapped the valves, ARP headstuds, evo springs and retainers, replaced the fuel pump, and replaced all of the other many gaskets and seals that are required to do this work.

I started it up and it sounds like I have aftermarket cams almost. Its making a loud ticking/slapping noise too that appears to get louder closer to the intake mani side of the motor. It pretty much sounds exactly like this video. Any ideas on what I should check? I let it run for about 15 mins and then set the base timing also. Thanks

Were the lifters replaced and bleed? I would start with pulling the valve cover and see if you notice anything that is not tight in there(i dont mean bolts). I am just going to go ahead and assume you have enough oil in the engine....

we took apart everything and cleaned the head. The lifters were bled before we put them back in. I drained the oil before I started it and then filled it until I got to the top of the dip stick. I torqued down all of the cam caps, I can't think of any other bolts under the valve cover besides the headstuds, and those were also torqued down.

How would I check the lifters? Do you think if I let it idle for a while longer it would help the lifter? Or perhaps I should rev the engine to increase oil pressure to help get oil in the lifters?

I'm going to do a compression test when I get home to make sure the valves aren't having any problems. Thanks for the replys

I would replace them they are cheap enough, ticking thats probably lifters. Idle wont help i had same problem i just replaced them when i had my head redone.

Did you change the oil filter? If you did and you just filled the oil to the top line on the dipstick it has most likely filled the new oil filter and your oil level is probably down to the lower mark on the dipstick, possibly giving you your tick. I would check the oil level now.

If you have plenty of oil you could try bringing up the rpm's to see if that changes anything.

If you still have the noise you can pull the valve cover off and try to push down really hard on the lifters to check them. They shouldn't compress at all. If any do or if they feel soft they will need replaced. Also check for any scarring on the cam lobes or any metal shavings laying in the bottom of the head.

If you have taken off the valve cover and re-torqued the cam caps then...you should rev it up.
you should have full oil pressure by 2000 RPMs. Rev it to that and hold it for a minute or more.
I had a stubborn lifter once that took like 20 minutes idling.

If that never solves it, replace the lifter(s)
In all that dis-assembly, cleaning, and reassembly there may have been something that got caught in an oil passage/bleed hole
.

did you change the brand or weight of oil used?

did you have the head surfaced?

you went from the stock head bolts to arp head studs? I bet that is the issue.

you restricted oil flow to the head, the dia of the ARP head stud is larger than the stock head bolts.

the 1g head bolts are necked down from 12mm to 11.21mm in the center porton of the bolt
this one head bolt hole is part of the oil feed to the head.

I used the same oil as before. The head was not resurfaced, I didn't use a multi layer steel gasket and visually there were no imperfections.

The oil filter did not come off, but the oil level will be the first thing that I check when I get home today.

I'll try reving the engine up around 2k for a while and see if that does anything. I see other people have had them tick for up to 20 minutes before, so maybe thats the issue.

If I can't get it to go away then I'll pull the valve cover and try and push on the lifters and see how that goes. The noise is exactly like the noise in that video and it was really scaring me. It was midnight and I was exhausted so I just went to bed. I'll check these things out when I get off work. Thanks for the replies.

Well I was messing with it for a good 45 mins and finally the ticking has gone almost completely away. The really loud ticking is all gone and you can barely here any ticking right now. I just revved it for a little bit between 2k and 3k rpms and let it try to idle. Fixed some vacuum leaks and now it seems to be idling, not perfect, but much better. I'm sure the remaining ticking will go away after I drive it for a bit.

Thanks guys, I really appreciate all your help. I was really worried because that ticking was like something I've never heard before.
