not sure where else to post this without gettin bashed, but newbie sounds bout right since im sorta new to dsm's but not to imports.
well anyway, i bought my 91 talon tsi fwd for $1,000 at the time ### it wasnt running. so i got it running, noticed it had several problems, including major exhaust leak from the head n exhaust manifold (was warped come to find out), it had many studs broke off in the head, n some rigged up wiring where somebody tried splicing the coolant temp sensor into the o2 sensor?
but to skip ahead a bit, i ended up just gettin another head n replaced the old. well before it would run fine but had problems, now it'll crank n idle fine but u can floor it n it takes a few seconds for it to even respond then takes forever for it to even get up to 3-4k rpm while misfiring like crazy. my guess is that my bro-in-law might've knocked timin of a few ticks while puttin the belt back on, other than that im bout clueless. any ideas?

thanks guys. we planned on setting the timing again today, but got rained out. i'll keep u guys updated. been dying to drive this thing since i bought it but had so much work to do on it :|

When you did the head swap, on the head you installed, did you remove the cams or HLAs? if so, did you blead down the HLAS?

what exactly is the HLAS? i pulled my valve springs, n cams because i had to reuse those. i had valves that came with the head, that i used because the newer one was fresh from the machine shop. i didnt reuse the old valve seals if anybodys wondering

think i answered my own question, its what the rocker arm sits on besides the valve spring so basically a lifter? i didnt bleed em down, not sure how to even, i dont remember anything like that in the book but i did pull the head bout a week before i could even get the old head on so my memory is a little blah...
but i did have to use those out of the old head also, i did make sure to put the ones out the old head in the corresponding spots on the newer one. i tried goin by the book as much as possible, but i could have missed something

Check timing first, then cam timing( assuming they are adjustable),Then a compression test. Did You lap the valves when u swapped them?

Also, what plugs are you running? I had this same problem and it turned out to be plugs and the valves would'nt ceet properly... I changed to NGK's and lapped the valves and never had another issue from it...

I've got ngk plugs and wires. They're pretty new and I've checked the gap. I have not lapped the valves, I just used the valves that came with the head

Did you put them back in the hole that they came out of? Did you leak test the head after re-assembling it? Have you verified the timing marks yet? Have you dome a compression test?

Well reset timing and all is good, its just overheating whenever it sits at idle. Not real sure why, but it runs great now just a lil rich according to my a/f ratio gauge
That n I'm over boosting if I let the rpms get to high, trying to tone it down with my mbc but it doesn't look like its helping any
