I searched for this one but found nothing.. :(

I just recently replaced the head gasket on my car. Tore everything apart, even took the cams & lifters out and checked them out, lubed them up, then put everything back together. Now I got everything backtogether, and it won't start. It turns over, but just doesn't fire. It's getting spark, and you can smell the fuel. Also, I checked timing, and aligned everything correct. I opened up the oil cap and it smelled like fuel in there too  I just don't know what to do, and I really need my baby running! It's an employed or unemployed situation

Thanks for any help or links guys

PS - Buy a dsmtuners shirt, I just got mine :thumb:

if you look at the end of the cams, where the cam gears are, you see the notches that line up, right. then look at the bolt that holds the gear on the cam, their is a small dowel pin that lines the gear up on the cam. both dowel pins MUST be facing UP, if they are down, your are 180 off, even if the notches are lining up, and you will be tryin to figure out why you are 1/2 to 1 tooth off when putting the belt on. and you will bend your valves if its off even this little bit.

Just wondering if you checked the tick marks on the cam sprockets. I know this sounds redundent, but when I blew my head and replaced it, I could not get it started either, and my plugs stunk with fuel, and I had low compression. Turns out, there are 2 tick marks 180 apart on the exhaust cam and one should be white and the other no color. Don't remember which one it is, but I do know that mine were 180 out. I think the fix was to match the intake and exhaust to the exact same marks. white or no color. Just look at you intake one as it only has one tick mark. I matched mine up and vroom, good to go. Hope this helps. If not I've got a 2g head with bent intake valves and good exhaust valves that I'll let go fairly cheap.

Yeah I checked all that, all timing marks were lined up perfectly. I even made sure they were lined up when I tensioned the t-belt. I do needed a new head though, I just needed the intake valves  Thanks for the offer though.

there are timing marks by the edge of the cam gear and DOWEL pins on the inside that MUST face up. there are two sets of timing marks on the outside of the cam gear, so it is VERY important you also make sure the dowel pins on both cams are at 12 o clock

Yeah i got all that straight. I counted 3 timing marks on each cam gear, the dowel pins, and the two ticks at the outside teeth opposite each other.

Blackbird, are you talking about the dots next to the cam gears? I just put my head on last night. I forgot about the two camshafts. I'm not sure which one is the intake and exhaust.

-The intake cam has a slot on the other end opposite to the timing belt for the cam angle sensor, exhaust cam doesn't have such a slot.
