I'm in the middle of replacing my oil pan. I have to remove the transfer case up front to get some of the bolts on the oil pan. I have already unbolted the 5 bolts that hold the transfer case to the tranny, but I can't figure out how I should remove the driveshaft out of the transfer case. I'd rather not drop the whole driveshaft if I don't have to.

I've searched for oil pan and found some threads on it, but no one seems to address the driveshaft.

Any help would be great...thanks!

Just drop the transfer case on the ground. You don't need to separate the two... Ex. I have done my tranny 4 times and I have never separated them.

The driveshaft easily slides out of the T-case without unbolting anyting on the driveshaft. I slide the driveshaft out of the T-case, prop the driveshaft up on a 1 gallon bucket so its not just hanging there, and carry the T-case out from under the car with the rear of the case pointed upwards so it doesnt leak fluid. Its literally about a 1 minute procedure once the T-case is unbolted.

Once all five t-case bolts are removed, simply slide the t-case off the output shaft of the tranny and set it on the ground. If your car is on jackstands, you don't even have to separate the driveshaft from the t-case. Just rest the entire assembly on the ground.

Ok oh, well I'm having trouble getting the t-case off the alignment pins but I guess I'll just pull a little harder. And your saying there is enough play in the u-joints to just set everything on the ground? I guess I'll give it another shot then.

I wouldn't just let it hang or sit on the ground. Slip the T-case off the drive shaft and set the Drive shaft on a bucket / box or something. You might as well change the t-case fluid while you have it out. You don't want that to run dry and lock up on you.

There's nothing wrong with letting it sit on the ground, still connected to the driveshaft. I've changed out my oil pan on my 2G three times in the last three weeks. This is how I did it every time. No sense completely removing the t-case if he only needs to move it to reach the oil pan bolts.

Firmly grab ahold of it and forcefully wiggle it until you see it pulling away from the transmission. Be very carefully, because it will seem very heavy as you lower it down. If it catches you off gaurd and falls, it will hurt what ever it lands on.

My car sits pretty low, but yeah, I have enough play to set everything on the ground. If you do decide to separate the t-case and the driveshaft, make sure you hold the ass-end of the t-case upward as it will leak fluid when not connected to the driveshaft.

Well If it actually reaches the ground then he'll be okay, but Depending how high you jack the car up it wont even reach the ground before all the stress is on the u-joints.

Its Not like the t-case is hard to get off the drive shaft...It literally slips right off...that is Why I suggested a Tcase drain and refill...so he is not making a "why did my rear wheels lock up while I was driving" thread in two months.

Yeah I got it off with a painful pinch on my middle finger when it fell suddenly. But I'm ok and more importantly the t-case is ok. I drained out the fluid before I even started because I wanted to replace the t-case fluid anyway. I also found out that apparently the car doesn't have a 2g oil pan so I had to order a 1g oil pan to fit. So tomorrow sometime I will tackle putting everything back together.
