With the two floor pieces,it makes a tighter fit and it's easy to take ina nd out, without scratching the interior plastics.Plus,if you have bass back there, plywood sounds like sh*t.MDF deadens the bass rattle.

no one ever said anything about bass, i just figured he wanted a flat floor, thats why i said plywood

thanks for the replies. my interior is already stripped out thats the way i keep it but i want it flat to transport my dj equipment from time to time. i dont understand why the gas tank goes into the hump but i will have to check it out. i thought about using mdf to make it flat but the hump makes it tough.

I have a box with a 12" sub in it, which I moved from another car to my Talon. The only thin that annoys me is the spare tire "bump" in the back of the car. My box won't sit even on this thing and it moves around alot while I'm driving. Has anyone attempted to remove this, flatten it, make a flat insert to put over it, etc?

You have a bump? i thought DSM's came with a tard-tire. Mine came with a full, but it only has room for a donut, so i got one, and put it in it's place. All better, no more bump, floor is flat and subs sit on top of it.

FWD has a hole in the trunk for a donut to sit in. AWD cars have a hump in the trunk. You have 2 choices. Build the floor so it's level with the hump, or work around it. You do have another option. Cut the hump out and weld a peice of flat metal in it's place.

alright, i c.

what i would do it build a false floor. just measure how much you need to raise the floor in refrence to the four corners, cut some 4x4 blocks that high, cut a piece of MDF that is form fitting, cover it with something, attach it to some kind of metal with something that is relitivly easy to get out yet secure, attach subs to that. There you go remobable in case of tire-farts.

If you were to cut the hump, you would have to also cut and weld the fuel tank flat and install a hose for fuel expansion (that's what the hump is originally there for). If you build a false floor, you will end up losing a LOT of your trunk space. If you are going without the spare, I'd just build a regular box to sit on the floor of the trunk with an area cut out to clear the hump and fill that area in with fiberglass so that the box wraps around the hump.

My car is a daily driver, so I have to keep the spare. My solution was a 50/50 MDF/Fiberglass setup that uses the space behind and around the spare tire, but it takes up a lot of space and due to the angles, laying down the fiberglass mat was very difficult. My next box will be an open framework and full fiberglass install, but since the hybrid box is just about done, I'll use that one for awhile so I don't have any pressing lack of bass, and let me take a lot more time on the next box.

There's really no pretty solution with the 1g AWDs, but a litte bit of creativity should let you get a solution that fits your budget and abilities pretty easily.

The only problem with going that route is that if you were to keep the spare and want to keep the hatch cover so that your gear doesn't get stolen, you only have about 6.5" to 7" of vertical clearance to work with, and even then that has the drivers firing directly into the bottom of the hatch cover, so you'd essentially have to make a new one with a large cut out and carpet wrap or you'll just have a ton of vibration and buzz. I really envy you FWD guys when it comes to stereo setups LOL.

Hey fellas, when i bought my car, there wasn't any carpet in the back where the spare tire went. There is just a huge buldge. I was thinking about grinding it out and putting a piece of sheet metal, but the gas tank also has the hump. I don't know what the carpet looks like so if anybody has any picks of theirs, i would really appriciate it.

There are rails that bolt down to the floor in the trunk. On top of the rails there are panels to make a surface about even with the spare tire when it is in. The carpet looks like this ...

... it is fitted to the hump for the spare tire.
I am sure you could find those rails and panels from the classifieds or a local junkyard.

So i searched and sarched and found that the 2g guys took out the dip in the drunk for the sapre tire and put sheet metal across.

So i wanted to take the hump out of the 1g AWD. i knew it was there because the gas tank was tucked up and they had to make that hump so the tire didnt slide around.
couldnt find anything! except
someone who asked and some guy replied and said oh in my 1g days i did it. theres just some bracing underneath you have to be careful of

soo iget out my cutting wheel and cut my hump. turns out the gas tank has a hump that pops up into it with the vent line. good thing i dint cut into my tank.

SO JUST A FYI
DONT CUT YOUR HUMP! YOUR GAS TANK IS UNDER THERE

and thanks for the guy who mis informed me!

yeah... Should have posted before you started cutting, as The gas tank sticks up in there to increase volume of the tank.

You should at least be able to make it a bit smoother overall with some new sheetmetal.

Sorry about whoever that was, but the second hit using "hump" in the Search gave back this thread, which this one has been merged to.
I'm trying to get the pics from the Wayback, but it's not playing just now.

ya ohwell.
i will try to work with it.
there is a couple of inches to play with.
so i will try and make a flat top. so it is actually useable
or to mount somehting on it??
my cars stripped and im patching floors and i cut out some other unnessecary metal.
I guess i just have another patch up job on my list.

Sorry to rez a dead thread, but I have a question about the hump. I just found out that the TSi was FWD AND AWD...so....fail. I need to swap my GSX motor into another Donor body and it is FWD. Here's the thing. If all I have to worry about is the gas tank in the back getting in the way of the drivetrain, I have no problem cutting out the indent in the TSi, welding in the hump and using my GSX gas tank. I just need to know everything bolts up or could be useable? Input?
